Mini-moto course starts
Posted on 05/06/08

A NEW mini-motorbike project is being kick-started to get youngsters to swap illegal riding for safe and responsible fun.
The mini-moto club, which is based in Braunstone, is designed to give a safe and supervised place for children aged six to 16 to ride mini-motorbikes.
The scheme has been set up with the help of Leicester City Council, Leicestershire Polices motorbike unit, local councillors and residents.
It will be launched at The Grove, in Cort Crescent, on Saturday, June 14, as part of the Man Day mens health event, which takes place there and at the nearby Braunstone Leisure Centre from 12 noon to 4pm.
The mini-moto club will run every Saturday for the next year at venues across Braunstone.
The Safer Leicester Partnership has handed almost 8,000 to enable the project to run for 12 months. The cash will go towards training, education packs, equipment and youth workers.
Organisers have already run a two-day training course to hire 15 volunteer marshals for the scheme. The course will also focus on road safety, mechanical skills, training and practical sessions.
Leicester City Councils cabinet member for health and community safety, Councillor Culdipp Bhatti, said: This is a very worthwhile idea to ensure that young people who want to enjoy riding mini-motorbikes can do so in a safe, supervised environment.
Illegal and unruly use of motorbikes can cause all sorts of problems for residents, so this is a perfect way to teach youngsters the skills they need to know and help to get them riding legally and competently.
