Have a safe and crime free Download music festival

Posted on 05/06/08

The police in North West Leicestershire are working closely with the organisers of the Download Music Festival to reduce the impact of crime during this year's event at Donington Park.

Last year, crime on the site increased by 58% from 203 offences in 2006 to 322. 147 offences, or 46% of all crime committed during the festival, involved theft from tents, despite numerous campaigns by the police and organisers to encourage visitors to keep their belongings safe.

The event, which runs from Friday 13 June 2008 to Sunday 15 June 2008, is expected to attract up to 135,000 people across the three days and 40,000 of those will be staying at the on-site camp sites. People will be arriving from Wednesday 11th June.

Inspector Chris Brown, Commander of the North West Leicestershire Local Policing Unit, said; "Unfortunately last year saw quite an increase in crime during the event which was a pity because we had worked hard to encourage visitors to keep their belongings safe. Understandably visitors at the event are focussed on having a good time but, unless they think about the safety of their personal belongings, they could end up facing the expense of replacing their stolen property.

The best way to keep your stuff safe at Download is not to bring it - if it isn't there, it can't be stolen. Tents are not the most secure accommodation and your stuff is vulnerable while you are away from it and while you are asleep in it! Use the onsite lockers if you can and keep any cash, phones and music players in a zipped money belt at all times.

"This year I am also putting extra officers on patrol in the surrounding villages to reassure residents that our resources are not directed solely at policing the event, in fact, they will see extra officers on duty."

Steps to a safe and happy Download;

  • Use the on-site lockers for your personal belongings; don't leave anything in your tent when you are not in it. You can either book a locker in advance through your ticket provider or buy one when you arrive for 5.
  • If you can't take your valuables with you when you leave the tent, leave them at home.
  • Put money, tickets, credit cards and mobile phones in a zipped pocket or use a money belt.
  • Do not bring large sums of cash. Only bring what you need and keep it on you at all times.
  • Postcode the property you do bring to Download so that it is identifiable. The police will return recovered property if they can reunite it with its owner.
  • If you arrive by car, don't leave anything on display in your vehicle including sat navs, car stereos, CDs or mobile phones. Don't put items in your glove box or the boot, this is the first place a thief will look. Take everything with you or leave it at home.

The Police will be on site 24 hours to assist where necessary. Officers and security staff will be patrolling both the camp sites and the car parks and each campsite will have a hub' with a hub' manager where people can go to report problems. Community volunteers will also be working on the site giving out crime prevention leaflets and post coding property if visitors have forgotten to do it before they arrive.
