National Food Safety Week

Posted on 04/06/08

AS the weather warms and the barbecue season starts Leicester City Council is using National Food Safety Week to highlight how to keep food safe and prevent illness.

The council is holding a series of events to illustrate the way that food should be handled and stored correctly as part of the national campaign, which runs from Monday 9th June to Friday 13th June.

The council will be hosting information stands in Leicester Market and the Consumer Advice Centre throughout the week offering advice on food safety. On Thursday 12th June a representative from the Food Standards Agency will be on hand to go through an interactive question and answer session using a touch screen computer. There will also be free giveaways, quiz sheets for children and a free prize draw.

Cllr Culdipp Bhatti, cabinet lead for health and community safety, said: Each year about 5.5 million people in the UK suffer from food poisoning, that is one person in every 10.

We are using the national campaign as an opportunity to highlight the measures people should take in their own homes to avoid illness.

This year residents are asked to think about the 4 Cs - cleanliness, cooking, chilling and cross-contamination. The council is asking people to ensure that sausages and burgers are cooked throughout and hands are washed before preparing food. It is also important to keep meat covered and in containers to avoid contaminating other food as well as using different chopping boards for raw and cooked foods.
