New traffic signs go up

Posted on 03/06/08

DOZENS of new signs that light up to warn speeding motorists to slow down are being installed on roads across Leicester.

A total of 44 Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) are being installed at nine sites across the city at sites where the city council is considering future road safety schemes.

Data on vehicle speeds collected before the signs were installed will be compared with information recorded by the signs to establish how effective they are. Data will also be passed to the police to determine whether further enforcement measures are needed.

The work to install the signs is part of a =A3150,000 scheme to improve road safety and cut accident numbers.

Sites where the VAS are being installed are: Chesterfield Road/Ethel Road and Downing Drive in Evington; Parker Drive and Halifax Drive in Beaumont Leys; Humberstone Lane, Scraptoft Lane, Wicklow Drive in Crown Hills, Glenfield Road in Dane Hills and Shanklin Drive.

Leicester City Council =8Cs cabinet member for transport, Cllr Patrick Kitterick, said: "These signs are important tools in helping make roads safer.

"They will provide a high-visibility reminder to drivers to cut their speeds, and data from them will help determine whether we need to undertake further measures to improve road safety."

Leicester City Council transport development officer, Steve Wagg, added: "Schemes using these signs are often used in rural locations, but we are one of the first councils to use so many across the city, which will give us city-wide information on traffic speeds."
