Man arrested following incident in Leicester city centre

Posted on 29/05/08

A man has been arrested following an incident on a bus in Leicester city centre.

Officers were called to Charles Street at 5.20pm today (Thursday May 29) following an incident in which a man was reported to be making threats to passengers.

A 43-year-old Leicester man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of making threats to kill. He is being questioned by detectives.

Due to concerns regarding the contents of a bag which the man was carrying, Charles Street was evacuated including shops, businesses and flats. In the interests of public safety and as a precautionary measure a cordon was also put in place covering Charles Street up to Humberstone Gate, Church Gate up to St Margaret's Way, Humberstone Gate up to Lee Circle and the Haymarket.

The Ministry of Defence's Bomb Disposal Team attended the scene and, following an assessment of the bag, a controlled explosion was carried out. It was determined that the contents of the bag posed no threat to public safety and the cordons were removed shortly after at approximately 8.45pm.

Superintendent Steve Boulton said: "We are confident that this is an isolated incident and does not have any links to terrorism.

"I would like to thank members of the public for their patience and co-operation during the incident. It was a demanding situation and I am pleased that it was resolved safely."
