Officers tackle speeding on Regent Road in Leicester

Posted on 29/05/08

A two-day operation to raise awareness of speeding on Regent Road in Leicester resulted in over 50 motorists being dealt with by officers.

PC Harvey Watson and PCSO Richard Smith from the Campus Park neighbourhood team used a mobile electronic screen to display the speed of vehicles using Regent Road on Tuesday May 20 and Wednesday May 21.

Anyone caught exceeding the speed limit was stopped by the officers and warned of the potentially dangerous consequences of speeding in a built-up area.

Over the two days, officers stopped and advised35 motorists about their speed and manner of driving. A further seven motorists were issued with 60 endorsable fixed penalty notices for using a mobile phone whilst driving, and four drivers were issued with 30 fixed penalty notices for not wearing seat belts, driving the wrong way down a one-way street or causing an obstruction by unlawfully parking.

A vehicle defect rectification notice was issued to one motorist in relation to bald tyres and no brake lights and three drivers were required to produce their documents at a police station as a result of theirdriving manner.

PC Harvey Watson said: "This wasn't about issuing fines but was about raising awareness of speeding among motorists using Regent Road. It is a busy road especially in the morning, evening and at lunchtime as pupils come and go from Regent College, and the consequences of speeding could be deadly.

"Tackling speeding and issues of anti-social behaviour in Regent Road has been identified as a priority for the neighbourhood team. We have already done a great deal of work to deter young people from gathering in the area and causing anti-social behaviour. A derelict building has been fenced off and increased police patrols have significantly improved the situation.

"We will continue to keep a close eye on the area and will respond to any further concerns raised by the community."

To leave a message for a member of the Campus Park neighbourhood team based at Welford Road police station call 0116 222 2222. Follow the instructions to leave a message and when prompted key in the voicemail number 9092.
