Police in Loughborough support under 18s dance music event

Posted on 29/05/08

The police in Loughborough are working with the organisers of an under 18s dance music event at Loughborough University to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable evening.

Just Insane Music' isworking with the Students Union to hold the event, featuring one of the biggest artists in the world at the moment - PENDULUM' with sidekick MC VERSE' - for an exclusive DJ set promoting their new album. Up to 1000 young people under the age of 18 are expected on the night.

The organisers have asked the police to work with them to make sure the event is alcohol and trouble free. It's being held during half term on Tuesday 27th May between 5.30pm and 9.30pm. Tickets are on sale for 10.

Officers will be using their new hand held breathalysers, called Alco Blows, to test people to check they haven't been drinking before the event or trying to smuggle alcohol into the building.

Edd Kiggins, from Just Insane Music, said; "I realised that there are very few credible events in the area for the under 18s. Young people want a chance to see top bands and popular DJs but they can't do that without going to venues for the over 18s. This event will provide a safe environment for the under 18s to dance and enjoy great music without the problems associated with alcohol and underage drinking. We are really pleased that the police have been keen to work with us and help us on the night by testing for the presence of alcohol to make sure the event is alcohol free and reassure parents that it's a safe and responsible event for their kids."

Sergeant 1666 Ian Stone, from Loughborough police said; "The Alco Blow's will tell us if any young people have been drinking before the event and, if they have, they will not be allowed inside. We can also use the Alco Blows to test liquid in bottles to see if they contain alcohol and we will turn anyone away if they are trying to get alcohol into the venue. We were pleased when the organisers approached us and asked us to help them make sure the event is held in a safe and happy environment for young people to enjoy."

The police will also have a stall at the event to promote crime prevention and personal safety and offer support and advice if and when it's needed. They are one of 10 organisations who will be running a stall, including Turning Point, a number of charities, the GUM Sexual Health Clinic and several youth clubs.
