Advice on enjoying a safe night out has received by almost 2,000 revellers in Hinckley and Coalville via Bluetooth.

Messages were sent to mobile phones in the town centres to provide people with information about avoiding the negative impacts of alcohol use.

There were just over 1,300 messages sent out in Hinckley which followed the theme of 'Lock em inn' and aimed to highlight the consequences of drunken, anti-social behaviour.

Nearly 600 messages were sent in Coalville focusing on getting home safely, pre-booking taxis and drinking sensibly.

The scheme was run on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights throughout August by Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire Constabulary, Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership, North West Leicestershire Partnership in Safer Communities, Pubwatch members and Leicestershire Drug and Alcohol Action Team.

Byron Rhodes, County Council Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: "I'm delighted that this innovative project has used new technology successfully and offered people advice on having a safe great night out. We hope that this approach will have helped to raise awareness that anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated. "

Inspector Martyn Ball, Commander of the Hinckley local policing unit,: “We want to get the message out to as many people as possible to enjoy themselves but not to over-do it and get into trouble as a result of drinking too much. These are light hearted messages with a serious undertone. We do not want to stop people having fun, far from it, but we want to make sure revellers don’t spoil a good night for themselves and other people by being anti-social.

“These messages have had a very good response so far, and we are pleased with the success of the Lock’em Inn campaign which has helped us see a 17% reduction of crime recorded in the town centre. There were 85 offences recorded between July 14 and September 1, compared to 114 offences recorded over the same period the year before.”

Councillor Trevor Pendleton, Portfolio Holder for Community at North West Leicestershire District Council, explained: “One of our key objectives as a partnership over the coming year is to improve the safety of people who visit Coalville and Ashby town centres.

“Using Bluetooth technology is a new and exciting way to send community safety messages, especially about excessive drinking and how to get home safely, to people in the town centre at night.”

Ron Grantham, Community Safety Manager, Hinckley and Bosworth Safer Communities Partnership, said: "The Hinckley and Bosworth Community Safety Partnership and the Borough Council want people to come into Hinckley town and enjoy themselves - unfortunately when they have had a few drinks it can lead to trouble. I hope that people have listened to the messages we have sent out on this new system, read them and taken in the serious messages we have given."
