RESIDENTS in an area of Charnwood are being encouraged to S.W.I.T.C.H to new ways of recycling household waste in a special trial.
Saving Waste In The Charnwood Home (S.W.I.T.C.H) is being launched by Charnwood Borough Council and aims to make a real difference in reducing the amount of rubbish that is currently sent to landfill.
A total of 1,400 homes in areas of Barrow, Loughborough and Quorn are being offered free equipment and will be encouraged to monitor the results of how they dispose of their waste during the year-long trail.
Homeowners taking part in the scheme are being contacted and allocated a time when they can pick up their equipment at a special launch event taking place at Humphrey Perkins High School, in Cotes Road, Barrow, on Saturday, September 20th between 11am and 4pm.
Recycling advice and tips will be available to other residents who are not taking part in the trial – while a free clothes swap is also taking place during the day and is open to everyone in the Borough.
The Clothes Swap is an exciting way of updating your wardrobe and any garments left over at the end of the day will be donated to the British Heart Foundation.
Cllr Mike Preston (Conservative councillor for Queniborough), Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Environment, said: “The aim of S.W.I.T.C.H is to find out how we can best help our residents to minimise the amount of waste they produce – and which activities are the most effective at diverting rubbish away from landfill.
“Although S.W.I.T.C.H is currently taking place on one small area specifically designed so we can measure the outcomes, we will be analysing the results closely and hope to make successful parts of the trial available to other residents in the Borough in the future
“This initiative is part of the Council’s Zero Waste Strategy which will help us to hit our target of recycling 50 per cent of all waste by 2010.”
People taking part in the S.W.I.T.C.H trail are being offered different equipment to prevent rubbish being put in the black wheelie bins.
This includes home composters, Green Cone food digesters, reduced-rate garden waste bins, wormeries and a Bokashi system.
The wormery is an easy-to-use efficient eco-system that houses worms which converts organic kitchen waste into bio-rich, high-quality compost and concentrated liquid feed.
Kitchen food scraps – including vegetable peelings, teabags, coffee grounds plus the leftovers of meat, fish and cooked foods - can be safely turned into home compost using the Bokashi kit.
Kath Kay, Charnwood Borough Council’s Waste Policy Manager, said “This is a fantastic opportunity for the residents on the trial to make a real difference to the amount of waste they are disposing of in landfill sites.
“The launch event on September 20th is a perfect opportunity to come along and ask questions, and to meet other people taking part in the trial.”
