Internationally acclaimed poet, Jean 'Binta' Breeze will be delivering two creative writing workshops at Charnwood Museum during September.
The workshops form part of Charnwood Museum’s popular ArtZone and CreateToo art programmes, organised with Charnwood Arts to engage adults, teenagers and pre-teens in the creative arts.
Participants at the workshops can explore poetry as a means of self expression under the expert guidance of Jean.
They also have the chance to be inspired by the Future Bright art exhibition, which is on display from Thursday, September 4 until September 28.
Jean is the patron of the Future Bright exhibition – the Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust’s first open art exhibition. The trust is hoping that the exhibition and workshops will inspire and engage local communities to use art and creative activities to improve their wellbeing.
Jamaican-born Jean suffers from schizophrenia and has written and spoken about her mental illness. She has performed her work worldwide - including tours of the UK, the Republic of Ireland, the Caribbean, North and South America, Europe, South East Asia and Africa.
Jean said: "As a user of mental health services myself, I am well aware of how the arts can help to heal a troubled mind. I congratulate the NHS on this exhibition”
Picture Poetry workshops with Jean ‘Binta’ Breeze will be held on Saturday, September 6. ArtZone sessions for children aged eight to 14 years will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm, CreateToo sessions for adults will be held from 2pm to 4pm. The cost is £5 per person, £2.50 concessions. Pre-booking is essential as places are limited.
Charnwood Museum is in Queens Park, in the centre of Loughborough, and is open from 10am to 4.30pm Monday to Saturday and 2pm to 5pm on Sundays. The exhibitions are free.
Charnwood Museum is run as a partnership between Leicestershire County Council and Charnwood Borough Council.
