The University of Leicester has been cited among the top in Europe for Maths and Biology in a new ranking of institutions by the CHE – Centre for Higher Education Development.
The Centre has launched a "Ranking of Excellent European Graduate Programmes" (CHE Excellence Ranking for short) for the disciplines of biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. The ranking is designed to support the search for a higher education institution (HEI) suitable for master or doctoral programmes. Alongside this, the CHE wants to highlight the research strengths of European HEIs and provide those HEIs listed in the ranking with ideas for the further improvement of their already excellent programmes.
Leicester features among the top groups for Mathematics and Biology. The ranking is on the basis of four indicators (number of publications, citations in relation to the international standard, number of oft-cited authors and number of projects in the EU's Marie Curie research promotion programme ); about 500 specialist departments from about 250 HEIs in 20 European countries were identified as part of a pre-selection process. These departments were performing particularly well against at least one of the indicators and were accordingly awarded a bronze, silver or gold medal. Departments that won a silver or gold medal attained top group status. Those that won at least three silver medals attained excellence group status. Approximately 120 HEIs won at least one medal and thus attained top group status, but only 25 of them qualified for excellence group status.
This recognition follows success for the University in national league tables: 12th in The Independent; 14th in The Guardian and The Times.
Professor Jeremy Levesley, Head of the Department of Mathematics, said: "This success provides recognition of how the department's research output has improved in recent years. We have magnificent staff in the department and, coupled with our excellent teaching reputation, this research accolade cements our postition in the top mathematics departments in the country."
The table shows the number of medals in all disciplines for each country represented in one of the excellence groups
A total of 283 medals were awarded to a total of 42 United Kingdom universities, accounting for programmes in biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Biology and chemistry made up the largest share of programmes in this Top Group, with 33 and 29, respectively. Twenty-four of the programmes were in physics, followed by 23 in mathematics. Of the 42 universities, 14 attained Excellence Group status, accounting for 23 programs that obtained at least three silver medals. The fields of biology and chemistry are particularly strong in the United Kingdom, including 8 biology departments and 7 chemistry departments with Excellence Group status. The University of Cambridge as well as the Imperial College in London attained a place in the Excellence Group for all four disciplines.
In addition to the quantitative measurements, the CHE ExcellenceRanking also contains a great deal of additional information on master or doctoral programmes, research groups and research focal points of given departments as well as accommodation possibilities and study fees. It is intended to widen the CHE ExcellenceRanking to other disciplines in the future.
The CHE - Centre for Higher Education Development, based in Gütersloh, is an independent institution that is committed to reform of the higher education system. Every year, the CHE compiles a fresh CHE UniversityRanking comparing German and international HEIs/European HEIs/ HEIs of German speaking countries for first year students. For the first time, the CHE ExcellenceRanking provides a comparison of the best European university research facilities for prospective master and doctoral programme students. The results will be available on the Internet for free. Facts and information about the CHE ExcellenceRanking can be found at www.che-excellence-ranking.eu. The results can be found at www.excellence-ranking.org .
