INCIDENTS of burglaries, assaults and car crime are falling thanks to a series of successful initiatives drawn up by the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership (CCSP).
And new targets to reduce violent crime, drugs misuse, anti-social behaviour while further reducing burglary and vehicle offences have been put in place by the group, which is made up of statutory representatives from Charnwood Borough Council, Leicestershire Constabulary, Leicestershire County Council, Leicestershire County and Rutland Primary Care Trust, Leicestershire Fire Authority and Leicestershire Police Authority.
Overall crime has dropped by eight per cent in 2007-08 compared to a baseline figure set by the Government in 2003-04. There were a total of 8,343 crimes recorded in 2003-04 compared with 7,693 in the last 12 months.
Initiatives such as improved CCTV, street marshals, plus working closely with residents in key areas of Charnwood and with Loughborough University are among the reasons for the drop.
The figures were revealed at a recent meeting of the CCSP, at which Cllr David Snartt (Conservative, Forest Bradgate), Charnwood Borough Council’s Cabinet member for Community Safety, was re-elected as Chairperson.
Cllr Snartt said: “It’s been a successful year for the Charnwood Community Safety Partnership and that’s been down to all the hard work that’s been put in by many agencies to help us achieve our aims.
“This has given us a head start for the new Partnership Plan, which will be reviewed annually and will aim to build on the successes we have already achieved.
“There is still a lot of hard work to do and we will not be satisfied until all areas of crime show a significant reduction.”
The CCSP also has members from a number of other agencies, including Loughborough University, Charnwood Neighbourhood Housing, Leicestershire and Rutland Probation Area, Leicestershire Drug & Alcohol Action Team, Leicestershire Youth Offending Service, Loughborough Women’s Aid, Loughborough Chamber of Trade and Commerce, Charnwood Racial Equality Council, Turning Point and Voluntary Action Charnwood.
Will Spinks, Loughborough University’s Chief Operating Officer, was elected Vice-Chairperson of the CCSP at the meeting and he said: “The CCSP is an excellent example of partnership working in our community.
“I am delighted to represent the University as Vice-Chairperson of this important initiative and look forward to the partnership making further progress in its important task of driving down crime."
