YOUNGSTERS will be modelling outfits designed from recycled products at a special fashion show next week.

Charnwood Borough Councils Waste Education Officer Vicky Brackenbury has been working alongside a group of six to 11-year-olds who attend Youth Zone, based at the Hut in Old Ashby Road, Loughborough, to promote the importance of recycling.

Various fun games and activities were held during the two-week project, which culminates with a Recycling Fashion Show on Tuesday, June 24 between 3.30pm and 5.30pm.

Vicky said: The issue of recycling is an area which is of paramount importance and something that everyone can get involved in despite their age.

All the children involved have been very enthusiastic about the project.

Through initiatives such as this we hope that the issue of recycling will be at the forefront of childrens minds when they throw their rubbish away and make them question if it can actually be recycled.

We also hope that this message will extend into their family homes, spreading the word on how easy it is to recycle and the obvious benefits to the environment it can bring.

Vicky has worked alongside Charnwoods Zero Waste Officer Charity King in educating the members of Youth Zone, which is a project fully supported by Loughborough Police since its creation a year ago.

Cllr Mike Preston, Charnwood Borough Councils Cabinet member for Environment, said: We want to give children the opportunity to learn about topics such as recycling in a fun and innovative way.

Through ideas such as this, we hope the message will come across loud and clear.

Sandie Gough, the Project Manager of Youth Zone, added: We worked with a group of young children on a project looking at the area they live in earlier in the year.

They identified rubbish on the streets to be an issue for them and so were very enthusiastic when Vicky agreed to come along and talk to them about recycling.

It is great that they can learn about how they can improve their own environment and that they can make a difference now and for their future, especially when it was in answer to an issue they themselves raised about their area."
