Forensic psychologists at the University of Leicester will be celebrating ten years of success running distance learning programmes at a conference at the University on Friday 18th July.

The conference, entitled ‘Forensic Psychology:  Improving investigations’ is open to students and to the general public.  The four invited speakers who are recognised internationally for their expertise are:

Jessica Woodhams on Crime Linkage Analysis:  Evidence for Its Underlying Assumptions

Dr Rachel Wilcock on Recent Research On Eyewitness Memory

Dr James Ost on Remembering and Misremembering Trauma

Dr Becky Milne on Investigative Interviewing: Recent Research and Developments

Professor Clive Hollin will open with a few words to mark the tenth anniversary of Forensic Psychology distance learning courses.

It was Professor Hollin, with Professors Ed Miller and Graham Davies, who set up the distance learning courses in the Forensic Psychology Section of the School of Psychology.

Professor Bull, Director of the Forensic Psychology Courses, said “A major advantage of distance learning courses is that it allows people to take further qualifications without having to give up their work or leave their homes.   One of our main strengths is the international experience our staff have in the area of Forensic Psychology”.

“The University of Leicester Forensic Psychology Section runs three different types of distance learning programmes at MSc, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate level which are taken by students from around the world.

“As our students study at a distance the University of Leicester, Forensic Psychology Section offers varied resources to enable students to assist them with their studying along with support from our expert staff.”

The distance learning programmes have met with enthusiasm from past students.  ‘S’ from Australia has completed both an MSc in Applied Forensic Psychology (AFP) and the MSc in Assessment and Treatment of Sex Offenders (ATSO).   She commented:   “Having had such a positive experience with the MSc AFP, when I realised the MSc in ATSO was available it was an easy decision to apply for this course.

“In both courses, I felt the level of contact, support, feedback and advice I received from staff in the School of Psychology, Forensic Section, was far greater and more helpful for my professional learning than what I had received throughout my previous undergraduate and postgraduate courses completed in my home country.  I felt the Forensic Section made every effort to ensure that, as a distance learning student, I did not feel isolated, either from staff or other students.

”I was already working as a psychologist in a forensic setting when I completed both MSc degrees, however I was in very different stages of my career at the time of each course.  Both positively impacted on my career in that they were relevant to my day-to-day work in a practical sense, not just theoretical."
