Young Offenders in Leicester
Posted on 23/05/08
P. Klein

THIRTY local volunteers have signed up to a training scheme to enable them to help young offenders.
The volunteers are about to complete an intensive training course to become members of the city councils Youth Offending Service Referral Order Panel.
Referral orders are handed out to young offenders who plead guilty to offences in court but who have no previous history of offending.
Panel members form part of the Referral Order Team and will work with youngsters, their families and where appropriate their victims to draw up contracts which aim to prevent re-offending.
All the volunteers will be presented with certificates marking the completion of their courses by Leicester Lord Mayor, Cllr Manjula Sood, on Saturday, May 24.
Students from Leicester College will also take part in a mock panel interview.
Cllr Sood said: I would like to congratulate all the volunteers joining the Referral Order Team together with everyone at the Youth Offending Service for all the support they offer.
Their achievements should be commended and celebrated. It is important to support young people and engage them in this programme in order to reduce the risk of re-offending.
The volunteers are from a range of ages and backgrounds, and the content of training scheme is put together by the Youth Justice Board. Previous volunteers also take part and share their knowledge and experience.
Leicester City Councils cabinet member for Health and Community Safety, Cllr Culdipp Bhatti, added: It is good to see local people getting involved in such a worthwhile scheme which gives them a chance to play an important part in tackling crime.
