SECURE boxes to keep drug treatment medication safely locked away from children are being handed out to clients at a city-based help and rehabilitation scheme.

The Criminal Justice Drugs Team, based at Nelson Street in Leicester, is offering the safe boxes free to anyone who has children regularly at home and who receives prescribed medication as part of a treatment programme.

The boxes are being manufactured by offenders carrying out unpaid work as part of community rehabilitative work as part of a partnership with the Leicestershire Probation Trust.

The secure wooden boxes feature child-proof safety catches and padlocks, along with information on what to do in the event of an overdose.

All clients must sign a safe storage agreement before they are handed a box.

The scheme is jointly funded and backed by the Safer Leicester Partnership and the Drug Interventions Programme.

Strategic manager of the Drug Interventions Programme for Leicestershire, Bernadette Wharton, said: The Criminal Justice Drugs Team is committed to providing a responsible drug treatment service, which ensures proscribed medications are stored as safely as possible.

I am please we have such strong partnerships supporting this initiative in Leicester.

Leicester City Councils cabinet member for health and community safety, Cllr Culdipp Bhatti, added: This scheme can help play an important role in keeping children safe. I am pleased that the Safer Leicester Partnership is helping to support a scheme for the safety of children.

National Drugs Week runs from May 19 to 23 and highlights the work being nationally on reducing drug-related harm to individuals and communities.
