TWO NEW book buses for children will be launched at a special community event.

Over 190,000 has been invested in the childrens book bus service to provide two new bespoke vehicles to bring books and reading to children across Leicester.

The buses will be launched by Cllr Andy Connelly, Cabinet lead for culture at the Brite Centre, Braunstone Avenue, Leicester on Saturday 24th May, at a special event from 2-4pm.

Cllr Connelly said: I am delighted to be welcoming the first visitors to our new book buses. These facilities enable us to take books and reading activities out into local communities. This is a great way to get children and families reading together.

This is a significant investment to ensure that the book bus service is an up-to-date comfortable environment for people to enjoy.

Reading and sharing books from an early age is an important foundation to formal education. The book buses are fun, with specially trained staff leading reading activities, so children get to try out and improve their reading skills in a more informal setting.

The two buses will have specific roles. The Childrens Book Bus provides a traditional mobile library service for children aged up to 11 years. It regularly visits communities in Saffron Lane, Eyres Monsell, Gilmorton, Thurnby Lodge, Netherhall, Northfields, Braunstone, New Parks, Mowmacre, and Stocking Farm. The Under-fives Book Bus visits around 140 childrens centres, nurseries, playgroups, crches and community events every year. It is an imaginative and stimulating environment to help introduce toddlers to the magic of books and reading. It also helps parents and carers learn about the importance of sharing books with their children, with top tips from trained storytellers. Book buses have been a feature of Leicesters library service since 1981. Last year over 27,800 visitors borrowed some 28,500 books from the book buses.
