Street pastors hit the streets of Hinckley tonight
Posted on 02/05/08
automatic

More than a dozen Christian Volunteers have trained as street pastors to support local officers and offer solace on the streets of Hinckley.
The team hope to play a part in cutting down drink-related violence and anti-social behaviour as well as give comfort to those who find themselves in the depths of despair.
Chief Constable Matt Baggott was at the launch of the street pastors on Sunday April 27 and they start their first patrols of Hinckley town centre tonight (Friday May 2).
Hinckley local policing unit commander Inspector Martyn Ball said: "The street pastors are non confrontational and will talk to people who are in distress to help give them some reassurance.
"They will be a calming presence in the town and help us to achieve our priority of reducing town centre anti-social behaviour and violence.
"We have looked at the influence they have had in other areas and it shows they have an impact in reducing town centre trouble.
"I am very grateful for their support and I am looking forward to working alongside them tonight."
The Ascension Trust, a Christian organisation, started the street pastors scheme in 1993 to help combat the growing amount of anti-social behaviour on our streets. It now has over eighteen teams in other cities including Leicester and they are continuing to grow.
The street pastors in Hinckley will work in uniformed groups of four and will be patrolling from 10:30pm to 2:30am, talking to people in bars and nightclubs.
