Officers take action to prevent predicted rise in burglaries

Officers from Hinckley Road local policing unit are taking action to prevent a predicted rise in burglaries in the area throughout May.

The operation has been prompted following analysis of crime patterns which revealed a substantial increase in burglaries in the area in May last year, with a total of 18 incidents recorded. This compares to 9 reported in March 2007 and 8 in April 2007.

High visibility and under cover patrols will be stepped up throughout the month. Crime prevention leaflets have also been dropped through letterboxes in the area of Grassmere Street, Jarrom Street, Windermere Street and Thirlmere Street to encourage residents to review their security.

Sergeant Steve Hutchings from Hinckley Road police station said: "Many of the properties targeted in May last year were rented by students. These properties are often perceived as easy targets as students often have expensive electrical items such as laptops and stereos and few security measures.

"This is already in the process of being tackled with the help of student volunteers from De Montfort University who have set up the SAFE scheme. They have already fitted door chains, locks and other security measures to over 50 homes in the area, in conjunction with police and the City Council's Feel Safe project.

"However we would urge all residents to review their home security. Many burglaries are carried out on the spur of the moment by opportunist thieves who may see an open window or easy entry point and take their chance. Don't make it easy for them.

"Always make sure that all doors and windows are securely fastened and locked every time you leave your property. Window locks are relatively inexpensive and serve as a good deterrent to thieves. Also mark any expensive items such as laptops, televisions and stereos with your postcode to help police identify them in the event they are stolen and recovered."

Anyone wanting crime prevention advice should view the relevant pages on Leicestershire Constabulary's website or call 0116 222 2222 and ask to speak to their local crime reduction officer.
