maypoleGet dancing at the One Rhythm Dance Festival from May to October in Leicester City Centre.

The One Rhythm Dance Festival is a colourful event with a diverse programme of themed dance performance, toe-tapping sounds and activities for the whole family.

The festival starts on Bank Holiday Monday (5th) with ‘Spring in Your Step’ – a celebration of May Day including traditional maypole and folk dancing.

The fun starts at 10.45am at Humberstone gate, with a performance by Leicester Morris Men. From 11am-2.30pm at Castle Park Gardens get a taste of traditional maypole and morris dancing, along with displays of folk and clog dancing.

From 11am-2.30pm at Town Hall Square from there will be a children’s activity area, and the chance for the whole family to try maypole dancing.

To round off the day everyone can join in the folk dancing with Ceilidh band Bang on the Wall 3pm-4pm on Humberstone Gate.

Craft activities and musical entertainment will also be on offer throughout the day at these venues. All activities are free.

‘Spring in your Step’ is the first of six dance festival events organised for the city centre from May to October. Celebrating different forms of dance each month there will be lots of opportunities for everyone to get dancing and join in the celebrations.

Cllr Patrick Kitterick, Cabinet lead for regeneration said: “One Rhythm is a great way to celebrate the landmark regeneration that has been going on throughout the city centre. With the completion of major projects like Highcross Leicester, CURVE and the refurbishment of the city centre streets we have a lot to celebrate in 2008”.

Other dance events in the festival include a young peoples dance day in June, Salsa, jive and ballroom dancing in July, world dance in August, and street dance in September. The festival will end in October with one of the biggest street parties ever in the city centre.

One Rhythm Dance Festival is supported by Highcross Leicester, and includes a dance event at the new shopping centre on Saturday 6th September.
