Employers work with University of Leicester students to enhance employability and management skills
Posted on 01/05/08
P. Klein

A programme designed to develop and enhance students' employability and management skills has been successfully run at the University of Leicester in conjunction with leading employers.
Eighty three students from the University of Leicester recently participated in Tomorrows Managers, run by the Universitys Careers Service in collaboration with some of the countrys top graduate employers. The course engages students in a variety of challenging activities including:
- Reflecting on team roles and establishing team goals and objectives
- Participating in simulated marketing and promotion exercises to launch a new soft drink
- Acting as management consultants to a failing retail company and presenting their findings and recommendations to the chief executive
- Acting as buyers and sellers for a drinks company culminating in agreeing a contract by negotiation
The employers and external organisations taking part in this years course were:
The Civil Service, Accenture, Allen and Overy, Bright Futures, Enterprise Rent- A -Car, Next, KPMG, Corus, Graduate Success, IMS Research, Next, PricewaterhouseCoppers, HSBC, John Day Marketing Associates Ltd, Cancer Research, and Logica. The involvement of such high profile organisations reflects the value of the programme in putting students in direct touch with the world of graduate recruitment, selection and employment.
Accenture Consultants commented. This was a great opportunity for us to engage with highly motivated students. I was impressed by the calibre of the University of Leicester students present on the course, many of whom had the makings of excellent future recruits for Accenture.
Student feedback was also excellent with one of the participating students saying It appears that just getting a degree is not enough in todays job market so going to courses like these are the most enjoyable and valuable ways to enhance your own career prospects.
Mandy Weston, a University of Leicester Careers adviser and Tomorrows Managers Coordinator was delighted with the event and explained that the programme had developed incrementally each year and this year was no exception with opportunities available for up to 90 University of Leicester students to participate. Mandy commented The energy and enthusiasm created by students and participating employers never ceases to amaze me and I would like to give a huge thank you to both students and employer representatives alike
