Information on Leicestershire

From the London Eye to the Eifel Tower in four days - that is the challenge six police officers from Leicestershire have set themselves to raise money for charity.

This is the fourth year the team of officers, who used to work at Shepshed, have raised money for good causes and this year they hope to raise £1000 for Wishes 4 Kids by cycling 262 miles from London to Paris.

The officers will set off from the London Eye on Monday 23 June 2008 and hope to arrive at the Eifel Tower on Wednesday 25 June.

PC 191 Robert Beaken is one member of the team who is now based at East Midlands Airport.  He will be driving the van and supporting the team of five other officers who will be taking part in the ride.  He said; "This is the fourth year in a row we have decided to raise money for charity and we seem to get more ambitious every year!  Last year we cycled 170 miles, this year we're stretching ourselves by going for another 80 miles.  We have set ourselves a target of £1000, which is how much we raised last year, but we would love to beat that so we are looking for as many people as possible to sponsor us for this worthy cause."

The team consists of PC 833 Pete Baker (now based at East Midlands Airport), PC 1574 Jim Saville, (based at FHQ) PC 4370 Linda Stephens (now based at Loughborough), PC 264 Andy Clifton (now based in the dog section at FHQ), PC 2040 Colin Gardner (now based at Castle Donington) and PC 191 Robert Beaken (East Midlands Airport)

Wishes 4 Kids is a Leicestershire charity dedicated to granting wishes for children and youngsters in the county who are life limited, terminally ill, have experienced life-changing physical or emotional traumas, have suffered major abuse or are diagnosed as HIV Positive. They have granted thousands of wishes for local youngsters.

Anyone who would like to sponsor the team can do so by logging onto the Just Giving website www.justgiving.com/shepshedpolicecharitycycle
