Officers are appealing for witnesses after an ornament was stolen from a garden in Wigston.

The incident happened sometime between 7pm on Saturday April 19, and 8am on Sunday April 20, 2008 when thieves stole an ornamental mushroom from a front garden on Shenley Road.

The mushroom is 2½ft tall and 2ft in diameter. It is cream and made of concrete.

PC Adam Bagley, who is investigating this incident, said: "The ornament is of great sentimental value to the owner as it was given to her by her late husband and is very keen for the return of her property.

"The mushroom is quite heavy and may have needed more than one person to move it from the garden. If you saw anyone acting suspiciously in the Shenley Road area please get in touch. We also want to hear from anyone who may have been offered a similar ornament to buy."

"We have recently seen an increase in thefts from gardens in the Oadby and Wigston area and are actively working to tackle this problem. We would like to remind residents to check their fences and hedges are secure and install security lighting in gardens to deter thieves from coming into your garden and stealing from you."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact PC 591 Adam Bagley at Wigston LPU on 0116 2222222, follow the instructions to leave a message for a police officer and when prompted key in the officers identification number 0591. Alternatively contact Crimestoppers, which is free* and anonymous on 0800 555 111.
