Police tackle illegal parking outside schools in Braunstone

Police in Braunstone are carrying out morning and afternoon patrols outside local schools to tackle illegal parking by parents.

Over the past few months, officersfrom Braunstone police station have received an increase in complaints about inconsiderate and illegal parking outside schools including St Mary's Fields Primary School, Folville Junior School, Caldecote Primary School, Braunstone Primary School and Queensmead Primary School.

Offences include parking on street corners, parking either half or fully on the pavement, blocking residents' driveways and parking on yellow zig zag lines.

PCSO Melissa Bailey from the North Braunstone neighbourhood team and PCSO Jimmy Chapman from the Rowley Fields neighbourhood team are carrying out the patrols. PCSO Bailey said: "Despite warnings, parents continue to park illegally and inconsiderately outside the schools with no thought for the safety of other road users or pedestrians. By obstructing pavements, they are often forcing children who walk to school to go onto the road to get past them.

"Officers are taking this very seriously and we have responded to concerns raised by carrying out morning and afternoon patrols outside the schools to improve road safety by advising or, in the worst cases, issuing fines to motorists committing these offences.

"We urge parents to walk their children to school where possible, or to park away from the school gates and walk the rest of the way to limit the number of vehicles outside the schools at these busy times. Any motorist that parks illegally risks a 30 fine or the possible removal of their vehicle."

To leave a message for the North Braunstone or Rowley Fields neighbourhood team call Leicestershire Constabulary on 0116 222 2222, follow the instructions to leave a message and when prompted key in the voicemail number 9091.
