The police in Ashby are tackling speeding in Spring Cottage after a recent speed check operation found that some motorists were exceeding the speed limit by almost double.
Spring Cottage Road runs straight through the middle of the village and its speed limit is 30mph. Ashby Woulds Town Council wants to build a children's play area in the village and asked the police to carry out speed checks along the road. Officers were surprised to find some motorists driving as fast as 60mph through the village which is double the speed limit. As a result, a focussed enforcement campaign is underway with the Force's Road Policing Unit and the Road Safety Camera team. Drivers caught travelling at 60mph in a 30mph limit can expect to be treated harshly by the courts; they could be banned from driving.
PC Joy Sweet, the Neighbourhood Beat Officer for Moira and Donisthorpe, which includes Spring Cottage, said; "At the end of the day someone could be killed either a child or an adult. Plans are underway to install a children's play area in the village on the opposite side of the road to the houses and a new cycle track is also about to open which will cross Spring Cottage Road. There are also a large number of Heavy Goods Vehicles using the road which causes concern to local residents."
PC Sweet is working with her colleagues in the Road Policing Unit and the Automatic Number Plate (ANPR) team to educate drivers about their speed. They've been using a mobile community speeding device which measures the speed of vehicles and flashes it up on a roadside screen. Police motorcyclists have been out regularly checking for speeding motorists and a number of Fixed Penalty Notices and Advice Notices have been issued.
PC Sweet continued, "I am working with Ashby Woulds Town Council to look at some longer term measures to tackle the problem such as permanent traffic calming measures and speed flashing signs but in the meantime I would urge motorists driving through Spring Cottage to slow down and think how awful it would be if they killed someone - either themselves or someone else."
Councillor Bryan Weston, from the Ashby Woulds Town Council, said; "If we are to go ahead with our plans for a children's play area on the land opposite the houses, then we need to put some sort of permanent traffic calming measures in place. The police are helping us gather evidence to put before Leicestershire County Council's Highways Department to make a case for funding. The Heart of the National Forest Foundation is also looking at the problem as they are working with Sustrans, which designs routes for cyclists, walkers and people with disabilities, to put a cycle trail in from Measham to Moira which will cross Spring Cottage Road.
"I hope that, between us, we can put a strong enough case together for funding to get permanent measures put in place to keep everyone safe."
