As the joint investigation by Leicestershire Constabulary and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue into a fatal house fire in Braunstone continues, a four-year-old boy has been discharged from hospital.
Two people died in the fire which happened in the early hours of Tuesday April 22 at a house on Heyford Road.
Deanne Harcourt (22) and her step-grandfather Gordon Parker (78) were rescued from the house but died of injuries sustained in the fire.
Post mortems showed that Deanne died from smoke inhalation and that Gordon died as a result of severe burns.
Gordon's 60-year-old wife was treated at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and has since been discharged. She is being cared for by relatives.
The couple's eight year-old granddaughter is at the Alder Hey Children's hospital where her condition is described as critical but stable.
A joint investigation between Leicestershire Constabulary and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue is continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the fire.
Officers can now confirm that the fire started inside the property, that there was no gas fault and no electrical appliances near the seat of the fire. Examinations of the house have also revealed that the property was secured from the inside and that there is no evidence of a break in.
Detective Inspector Simon Preston of Leicestershire Constabulary said: "Following lengthy and detailed examination of the scene we know that the fire started downstairs inside the house, before spreading rapidly through the building. We are still working with our colleagues in the Fire Service to establish what caused the fire to start but are satisfied that there was no electrical or gas fault.
"The remaining investigative work may take some time and whilst we hope to uncover exactly what happened we have to accept that we never know exactly how the fire started. We are treating the incident as unexplained at this stage.
"In a tragic coincidence, the couple who lived at the address lost a daughter and four grandchildren in a house fire in Bendbow Rise ten years ago. Our thoughts are with the surviving family members at this time."
