Thorpe Astley vehicle crime prevention road-show

Blaby Community Safety Partnership is holding a vehicle crime prevention road-show in Thorpe Astley to highlight ways of securing your car and to clamp down on car thieves.

The road-show is one of six planned to take place throughout the year, all of which will be based around various forms of crime prevention. The first will focus on vehicle crime and will be running from Monday April 28 to Friday May 2.

The Blaby community safety partnership which incorporates Leicestershire Constabulary, Blaby District Council and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue service among other local agencies, will be running the event and specialist advisers will be on hand to provide a range of information on vehicle crime reduction.

Sue Willet, community initiatives co-coordinator for Blaby local policing unit, said: "This road-show is a great way to communicate with the local community and reassure the public that the police and council are working together to tackle vehicle crime.

"We will be targeting identified streets and handing out sat nav wipes so that people are aware to remove their sat nav equipment and wipe away any marks the windscreen holder leaves behind."

Police officers, Blaby Community Safety Officers and representatives from the fire service will also be visiting community groups during the week and calling on residents in their own home to hand out crime reduction information packs.

Motorists are being urged to help reduce car crime by following these simple security tips:

  • Immobilisers - fit an immobiliser and don't forget to activate it when you leave your vehicle.
  • Security devices - steering wheel and gear stick locks or other security devices are good deterrents to vehicle crime.
  • Keep your keys safe - remove the ignition key every time you leave your vehicle. It only takes a few seconds foe someone to jump into your car and drive away.
  • Doors and windows - always keep them locked when the vehicle is left unattended.
  • Etching - have the Vehicle Registration Number etched on to all glass surfaces including the side windows and headlamps.
  • Stereos - stereos are one of the most sought after items. Fit a removable stereo or one with a front that can be taken off and put somewhere safe (not in your glove box or under the seat, thieves know where to look!)
  • Belongings - don't leave any belongings on show. Even an old coat on the back seat is a target for someone to smash and grab'. Consider marking all your valuables, especially those that you frequently take in your car.
  • Sat navs - remove from display including sat nav cradles. Rub the dashboard and windscreen to remove any marks left by the cradle.
  • Parking - if possible use a garage to park your car overnight or when unattended for long periods. Park in busy or well-lit areas near CCTV cameras or in police-approved car parks if possible.
