SCHOOL children will be getting involved in Leicester in Bloom 2008 by learning about recycling and litter in the city.

On Friday (25th), children from Bridge Junior School will meet litter wardens and staff from the Cleaner City Team in Museum Square, where they will help with a mini litter pick. They will also hear how plans for Leicester in Bloom are shaping up.

Then, the pupils will travel to the Bursom Recycling Centre in Beaumont Leys, where they will tour the plant and the Ball Mill to see how materials for recycling are extracted from the citys waste.

Stuart Marbrook, Leicester in Bloom co-ordinator, said: It is important that people realise that Leicester in Bloom is not just about plants and flowers, it is about the quality of the whole environment.

Bridge Junior School is supporting Leicester in Bloom by running a recycling project in conjunction with the competition. After their visit, pupils will create a piece of artwork based on the theme of recycling, which will be displayed during competition judging.

Peter Driver, head teacher at Bridge Junior School, said: We are delighted to be able to support Leicester in Bloom 2008. The visit complements the wide range of initiatives currently taking place in school.

Leicester won gold and silver gilt awards in 2005 and 2006 and a further silver gilt award in the 2007 competition.

The city will represent the East Midlands in the urban regeneration category in this years RHS Britain in Bloom competition.
