fireOfficers from Leicestershire Constabulary and Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service are continuing their investigation into the cause of a fatal house fire in Braunstone.

The incident happened at around 2am this morning (Tuesday April 22). Six people were rescued from the house and taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

A 78-year-old man is in a critical condition and his 60-year-old wife is in a stable condition. The couple's eight-year-old granddaughter has been transferred to Alderhay Children's hospital and her condition is described as stable.

A 22-year-old woman, also believed to be the couple's granddaughter, died in hospital. Her name will not be released until formal identification has taken place. A post mortem examination is due to be carried out at the Leicester Royal Infirmary this evening.

A four-year-old boy and two-year-old girl, who were staying at the house, are in a stable condition.

Detective Inspector Simon Preston, who is leading the investigation, said: "A specialist investigation team from Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service, together with scenes of crime officers, continue to carry out a detailed examination of the scene.

"The investigation is still in its early stages and the cause of the fire and whether it was malicious or not has not yet been determined."
