policeman keeping his eye on thingsThe Commander of South area police has welcomed the end of year crime figures for 2007 /08 and praised officers for their outstanding efforts in reducing the numbers of crimes across South Leicestershire.

There were 1,721 fewer victims of crime in the area, the lowest figure for three years. There have also been significant reductions in almost all crime categories with acquisitive crime down by 572 offences and violent crime down by 459. One of the largest reductions is burglary dwelling, with 235 less offences or a reduction of 18 per cent.

Chief Superintendent Garry Forsyth, Commander of the South Area, said: "I welcome this opportunity to praise the hard work of my staff who have all contributed to these impressive end of year performance figures.

"It is extremely gratifying to be able to give such positive news which I hope will re-assure the local community that the chances of becoming a victim in South Leicestershire have been further reduced over the past year.

"These results have not only come from the efforts of our officers but also from our commitment to working closely with our partner agencies, and of course, the local community.

"We are not complacent however and through Neighbourhood Policing and our robust approach to dealing with offenders, we hope to make further reductions in crime next year."

Other significant falls were vehicle crime, where there were 147 fewer victims. Racially or religiously aggravated crime was down by nearly 20 per cent and drug offences down by 11 per cent.

policeCh Supt Forsyth added: "We are committed to making the South area a safer place to live, work and enjoy yourself, free from the fear of crime. We rely strongly on the support of the community and our partner agencies. These performance figures can not be achieved without working in partnership - and together we are able to drive down crime further."
