Dr Raffael Schaffrath

The University of Leicester has appointed Dr Raffael Schaffrath as a Reader in the Department of Genetics. A graduate of the University of Leicester, he has previously worked at Harvard Medical School.

Dr Schaffrath sees his new role as an exciting opportunity to establish closer multidisciplinary links through independent and collaborative research on various aspects of genetically and biomedically orientated sciences that will contribute to strengthening the Universitys research. To do so he recently got support from the Royal Society, The Hope against Cancer Foundation and the BBSRC.

Following on from his PhD, awarded by the University of Leicester, Dr Schaffrath joined Professor Kevin Struhls Group at Harvard Medical School, Boston as a post-doctoral Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. He continued his research at the Department of Genetics, University of Halle, Germany, where he started his independent research group.

Dr Schaffraths work has resulted in a number of projects that continue to be very well received by the international scientific community. The research has been featured in prestigious EMBO J, Mol Mircobiol and JBC journals, and more recently, he has also co-edited a book on Microbial Protein Toxins.
