It has been announced this week that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has awarded 969,000 to Leicestershire County Councils Environment and Heritage Services to develop the Melton Carnegie Museum.
The development will comprise a ground floor and first floor extension to the rear of the existing museum which will double the size of the museum.
The new space will include:
A Community Archive to support work being undertaken by local history groups and partner organisations, including the Museum of Hunting Trust. The local history resource is used by local and regional specialist and non specialists for family history and subject specialist research.
Additional permanent displays, which complement the existing displays, will focus on rural life in the area and be of interest to local visitors and visitors from further afield. The displays will include contentious contemporary rural issues and will reflect home and family life as well as working life in the countryside in the borough. The displays will feature topical issues including post office closure, transport and "green issues", as well as diversification of the rural economy.
A Community Hub on the first floor will create a dedicated space for activities and events for use by schools, community groups and volunteers.
Cabinet member for Community Services, Councillor Ernie White said: We are delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled this much needed development to take place. The museum has become increasingly popular with school and community groups and has an active programme of events and activities which are well supported by local visitors.
"The museum is well placed to address rural issues and has a proven track record of dealing with contentious rural issues. This development will enable the museum to consolidate and build on achievements of the last five years.
The work is due to start in the summer of 2008 and will take two years to complete.
Background information:
The Melton Carnegie Museum is one of seven visitor attractions operated by Leicestershire County Councils Community Services and first opened as a museum in 1976.
In 2002 an HLF award of 380,000 enabled refurbishment and redisplay of the museum to include the history of foxhunting and its opposition as well as the social, artistic and economic development of the area, including Melton Mowbray pork pies and Stilton cheese.
A further award of 50,000 in 2005 enabled the museum to create a unique oral history archive and recorded the immediate impact of the Hunting Act from a range of different perspectives. The archive was used to create an educational resource which could be accessed by the internet.
The museum has an active programme of events and activities which are well supported by local users. In addition, a programme of temporary exhibitions and a community showcase encourages visitors to return. The museum is well used by local primary schools.
