Further Information on Fish and Chip Shops
Deep-fried fish and deep-fried chips have appeared independently on menus for many years although the potato did not reach Europe until the 17th century. The originally Sephardi dish pescado frito, or more commonly known deep-fried fish, came to the Netherlands and England with the Spanish and Portuguese Jews during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The dish became well-liked in wider circles in London and South East England during the middle of the 19th century (Charles Dickens refers to a "fried fish warehouse" in Oliver Twist, first published in 1838) whilst in the north of England a trade in deep-fried "chipped" potatoes started to develop. The first ever chip shop is said to have stood on the present site of Oldham's Tommyfield Market, but many other localities make similar claims. It remains unclear exactly where and when these two menus combined to become the fish-and-chip shop industry that is commonly thought of nowadays. Joseph Malin is said to have opened the first combined fish-and-chip shop in London in 1860 or in 1865 while a Mr Lees promoted the concept in the North of England in Mossley, Lancashire in 1863. The date of the first fish and chip shop in Loughborough or the wider Borough of Charnwood has yet to be ascertained.
