Labrador Retrievers are very friendly, athletic, good natured and highly intelligent dogs.
Labs have a wonderful temperament. They are exceptionally gentle and well balanced. They are good with children and are very obedient. These are very dependable canines and are very intelligent and very easy to train. Training this breed should be started early on in age but it is never too late to train your Labrador Retriever. They respond to dog training very well and they are quick to catch onto your commands. They have to be taught right from wrong. At times training your lab can get challenging but a fully trained dog is truly happier.
You need to stay consistent with your actions and your commands and go strong every day. Labs are easily trained because they love to work with their owners because of their nature. These dogs stay active and are very athletic. They do best when they have a nice yard to play in and can run around to get there energy out. It is best to try and train your Lab as a puppy it is not impossible to train them as an adult. However, it does make the process a little more difficult because you are having to change your dog's behavior and change what it knows. Still your lab is smart and will catch on sooner than you think.
Labrador Retriever Training is really not much different from training any other dog, but they just have much more energy to burn off than other. Labs love to be with their owners and they love attention so be sure to reward your dog for all good behavior. There are many ways to reward a dog. It is best to show them a great deal of affection or give them a treat for positive reinforcement.

From all dog breeds, the Labrador Retriever is the most praised and wanted breed to have in household. It is so for few reasons - they're kind to kids, easy to train and are great companions in everyday situations. Labrador retrievers are perfect pets, I dare to say.
You absolutely have to train your Labrador retriever, even though they're regarded as peaceful and kind dog breed. There will be situations when you'll have to verbally correct your dog in order to prevent something bad, like your dog biting someone or injuring a kid when playing. Your Labrador retriever should at least learn the basic obedience training commands like SIT, STAY, OFF and DOWN.
How you should train your Labrador retriever
You can expect the best results if your dog is still a puppy. Puppies learn the fastest and are generally more acceptable for corrections then older dogs. Training your Labrador retriever should start with simple commands like DOWN in short 10 to 15 minute sessions.
It is best if you can have 3-5 such sessions per day. You can do it while walking your dog, just make sure you always bring some treats with you. Dogs love quick treats and will associate them with correct actions such as DOWN, SIT and others. Only give a treat if your Labrador retriever completes the command. Don't be half-done here - he must complete the whole command.
For example, it is not OK if you say DOWN and your dog only lowers his head and the front part of the body. The DOWN command is complete when your dog's stomach is flat on the ground. Then and only then he deserves a treat. Failing to be consistent here will result in your dog playing you all sorts of the tricks, just to get a quick treat. Don't fall for it...
Another example is when door rings, your Labrador retriever will most likely run wild towards the doors and jump on your guest. This can easily be corrected like this:
Have your friend stand on the outside and be ready to ring the door bell. You and your Labrador retriever should be alone in the living room. Signal your friend to ring a bell and immediately give your dog a treat. Don't let him run out of the room. When your dog have settled down and ate his snack, repeat the ringing. Only this time wait for about a second before you give him a snack.
Repeat this process few times and with each time extend the amount of time between ringing and giving your Labrador retriever a treat. If you did this properly, whenever your doorbell rings your dog will not be running wildly toward the doors but will be focused on you expecting his treat. Job done!

Training your golden retriever to behave is not hard. Although it is easier to train a puppy, you can effectively train an older dog without much difficulty. The ideal age you should start training a puppy is when he is about six to eight weeks old. You should always start out by house training your puppy, preferably right after you bring him home for the first time.
If your golden retriever is not being obedient, it could likely be that your not giving him enough exercise. Golden retrievers are a very active breed, and you should be able to devote at least an hour a day to play with him. Whether it be a walk, playing fetch, or swimming, if you let your retriever exercise more they are less likely to be disobedient.
When teaching your dog tricks like sit, it is very handy to use a clicker. It works like this; when you tell your retriever to sit and he does you give him a treat, and click the clicker. Only click when he does what you want and you give him the treat. When he masters that he will not need a treat, but will respond to the click sound. Also, remember to praise your dog when he does what you want. Praising him will let him know that he did what you wanted. When he makes a mistake and doesn't do what you want, firmly say; "no" and don't give him the treat. Remember you must be patient with your golden retriever.
