Good Way to Stop Dog on Dog Aggression
Good Way to Stop Dog on Dog Aggression
By Mike Sorian
My great big German Shepherd male looks scary, but really is a total sweetheart- but only to people, that is. In fact, instead being a scary watchdog, he was the opposite of the typical aggressive German Shepherd. Instead of barking and frightening anyone he saw enter his territory, he would bark and wag his tail at the same time-not too fearsome. But whenever he saw another dog in the vicinity, even a female, he would get very agitated and I had a real problem calming him down every time. Stopping his dog on dog aggression was absolutely necessary for being able to enjoy taking him out in public. Without stopping his aggressive behavior towards other dogs, I was not comfortable bringing him anywhere. I mean, he was a 90 pound dog, so it was a scary and noisy experience every time he got all worked up. It took a lot of my strength just to hold him at my side. This wasn't my idea of a fun walk.
There are lots of reasons dogs can become aggressive. After all aggression is part of their natural instinct. Dogs needed to be aggressive just to survive. They used aggression to protect their dens and families and to hunt and kill their prey. If you've ever watched a nature show about the wild dogs in Africa chasing down some food on the hoof, you know what I mean. Even after all these years of domestication the aggression instinct still remains, and stopping the occurrence of dog on dog aggression is an important thing for any owner to know how to do. As an owner you need to control your own dog if he is overly aggressive, as well as know how to recognize and avoid another dog that is displaying aggressive behavior. Understanding the reasons for dogs becoming aggressive is a good way to go about stopping dog on dog aggression before it gets a chance to occur.
If you have an aggressive dog like mine, you'll see him immediately focus on any new dog in the area. Most likely, he'll probably want to go over there and start to dominate the other dog and give it a hard time. Dogs display dominance in a number of ways, including trying to place their head above the other dog's head or perhaps by placing one or both forelegs over the other dog's shoulders. As they become more aggressive they will raise the hackles on their back, growl and show off their teeth. You'll want to stop the dog to dog aggression before it gets to this stage. If the second dog does not begin to act submissively at this point, there will very likely be a dogfight. Anyone familiar with dogs has seen these dog behaviors many times before. If you pay attention to your pet, you'll see these disturbing behaviors in time to be stopping the aggressive behavior and maybe a dog fight that could otherwise soon follow.
I learned a good tip about dog training from reading Secrets to Dog Training, the online dog training program that is my go to source for solving my pets' problems whenever one pops up. Happily, this technique for stopping dog on dog aggression worked wonders for my dog. Use this advice, and I bet your dog will learn to start enjoying his new "doggy friends" like mine did.
Arrange a meeting with a friend who has a dog that is not aggressive at all. You can now begin stopping your pet's dog on dog aggression problems by introducing him to the idea that another dog can be a lot of fun. If you have a male dog, I'd strongly suggest starting this "friend" training with a female dog. Dogs of the same gender tend to be more aggressive with each other, than to dogs of the opposite gender. My crazy dog Rocky didn't even like female dogs until he had his "friend" therapy. That should give you an idea how messed up he was. It is also a good idea for the dogs to meet either at the house where the non aggressive dog lives or in a neutral territory like a park. This is so your dog doesn't feel like he needs to protect his turf. In my case I brought Rocky over to meet his prospective "new girlfriend" at her house. Be sure to have both dogs on their leashes so you can maintain complete control in case your dog becomes aggressive and lunges. Since you already know your dog is aggressive, you can expect him to become agitated at the proximity of his new friend. Be sure to stay far enough apart that the dogs can't reach each other in case your aggressive dog lunges, and put the dogs in the sit position. If your dog is acting aggressive, you need to remind him who's the boss, and make sure he stays in the sit position. I am assuming you have already obedience trained your dog, and he knows you are the superior member of the "pack". Unless your dog is already trained to listen to your commands, stopping the dog on dog aggression is not going to be possible at this point. (A great way to avoid ever having this dog aggression problem, is to start obedience training and socializing of your pet when he is still a young puppy). Anyway, once he has calmed down and stopped his aggression- be sure to let him know you are happy with his calm behavior by giving him lots of praise and affection and also a treat reward. This positive reinforcement will eventually make sure he understands that he gets a reward for not being aggressive. To get the best and quickest results with your dog training you need to always be consistent so your dog never gets confused. Don't emphasize the negatives by yelling at your dog. Just be sure to use the positive reinforcement techniques that will make him always want to listen and to please you.
Once the dogs show that they are calm around each other bring them close enough to take a preliminary sniff at each other. This is the way dogs greet each other in nature, and there should ideally be no growling, no hackles raising, and no paws over the other dog's shoulder. If you dog is still calm at this point you have already begun stopping the dog on dog aggression in your pet. We repeated meeting each other several times to test my dog's aggressive reaction. Happily, he became calmer much quicker and began to tolerate and accept the presence of his new doggy friend. Once he seemed like he actually enjoyed his new "friend's" company we let them play together off leash. The final test was in Rocky's yard. Would he be friendly to another dog on his own turf? I was very happy and relieved to see that Rocky was happy and excited (in a good way finally) to see his new friend come visit In fact Rocky's tail started wagging as soon as he realized he had a visitor. This is the opposite of his previous behavior, and a very welcome sight. By now, we could let the dogs play off leash, even on Rocky's home turf and there were no problems.
Although this was just the start, I now knew how to introduce Rocky to new dog friends, and we were on the way to stopping his really bad dog on dog aggression problem. I began to bring Rocky for walks at the park, on his leash of course, and he could walk alongside me without paying hostile attention to other dogs. It has now become enjoyable to take my dog out in public. Stopping Rocky's dog on dog aggression made it a lot more fun than being worried and embarrassed by my crazy dog's lunging and barking frenzies. So, if your dog is a maniac like Rocky used to be, try this technique for stopping your dog's aggression to other dogs, and you should see good results. We still had to get Rocky to the stage where he could actually run loose and play with dogs he hadn't already made friends with yet, and I found some other good training tips for that and a lot of other stuff I've had to deal with in the Secrets to Dog Training book.

Top 3 Wrong Approaches For Aggressive Dog Pets
Top 3 Wrong Approaches For Aggressive Dog Pets
By Aleesha London
You might want to know what you can do for aggressive dog pets. After all, if you truly love dogs, you would want only the best approaches to curb your dog's unwanted behavior. Some dog owners however, unknowingly encourage dog aggression with the wrong approach.
Giving Way
You might feel like just letting your dog be. This is especially if you do not savor the potentially long and effort-filled task of correcting your dog's behavior. Giving way to an aggressive dog however is never a good idea. Such simple acts as letting it walk ahead of you or giving it a treat while it is barking excessively can worsen your dog's negative tendencies. It might think that it has a higher rank than you and that it's doing all right by acting the way it does.
Head-On Confrontation
Some owners also believe they are doing what's best for their dogs by being aggressive too. Hence they may openly shout and scream at a barking dog or even threaten to hit their pets. Such techniques however may encourage aggression more than discourage it. Instead of behaving, your dog may become fearful or may think that you are challenging it, thereby encouraging more negative behavior from it.
Neglect
Some think that the best approach would be to ignore them. You might think that your dog will behave itself eventually. Nothing can be farther from the truth though. Snubbing your dog when it acts up can also be a cause for more aggressive acts. This is especially if you have a very active dog that simply needs the proper outlet for its energy.

What Your Dog Says About You
What Your Dog Says About You
By Jay J. Whoods
Forrest Gump said, "Momma always says there's an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they're going. Where they've been." For dog owners there is an awful lot you can tell about them by their dog. A dog can give you a good look into his master's personality. There is a wide variety of dogs and their masters all with varied lifestyles and characteristics. They range from the homeless guy on the corner with his "Heinz 57" mixed breed to the high society debutant with her champion poodle imported from France. Whoever you are and wherever you are from there is most likely a dog that fits your personality.
There are a few different clues to our personality given away by our dogs. First, is the type of dog that we have. For example the German Shepherd is widely recognized as a great all around dog. The German Shepherd is known to be very smart and high in energy. A well trained German Shepherd shows that his master is a person that can be the leader of the pack at home. What about when you see a Pit Bull? Isn't it pretty much the opposite effect? These dogs have a reputation as being unpredictable, aggressive, and dangerous. Often a person that has a Pit Bull is someone that is trying to look tough. They think that having a dog that is capable of killing makes them look intimidating. In reality, it can show that they are possibly victims of S.M.S. ( Small Man Syndrome ).
Another clue to your personality is the health of your dog. If your dog eats right, gets enough exercise and attention from you it shows that you really care about your companion. Having a healthy, happy dog also shows that you are a responsible person and that you are capable of providing a good life for your dog. A sickly dog or one that is either over or under weight is an obvious sign that his master does not care about him. Or maybe they liked the idea of having a dog, and then after a little while the novelty was gone and they started to neglect their dog. This person should not have a dog.
One more way that your dog says something about you is his behavior. We have all been to the park and seen the out of control dog that cannot even walk along side his master on a leash. Seeing someone try to get an untrained dog to listen can be painful to watch. Most likely this person is the type of person that starts something and then does not finish it. They got a dog and want to have fun with him, but they have failed to put the proper time and effort into training the dog. Being the master of a well trained dog shows that a person is willing to put in the work ahead of time to have an enjoyable experience with their dog.
Having a dog can be a great experience for both master and pet. This is as long as you take care of mans best friend in the right way. So enjoy this relationship and show others your personality through your dog.
