Dog Training Leash - The Right Way to Use a Leash When Training

Dog Training Leash - The Right Way to Use a Leash When Training
By James Ericson

Does a dog training leash really work? Using this device when training is important for making sure your animal is obedient because it shows them you are in control and they can't just do whatever they want.

In most instances the animals are first instructed on learning a new thing while on a leash; once they demonstrate they've learned the new skill then you don't need to use it as much. Remember, there are right and wrong ways of using a dog training leash.

The RIGHT ways

First, you should begin using the device when the dog is as young as possible since this dramatically raises the chances of it working. Make sure you think about which dog training leash you buy because it does make a difference.

Leashes vary in term of size and sturdiness, and getting a well built one is important. If it's flimsy and the dog is big and strong, they can sometimes snap it and get away.

How to train

When it comes time to train them, don't rush the process. Remember that it will take time to get the animal to adjust to the leash, and in particular the collar. At first they will resist it.

That's natural and a great way to get them more used to it is to have them wear it while out for a walk. Make sure they can walk effectively with it and make sure they match your pace.

Also have them wear at least the collar around the house just to become accustomed to the feeling of it; this will help them not mind it so much, and therefore be more responsive when training.

The MOST important part

Don't forget that this device is merely a means to an end-it isn't the end. Its' job is solely to get your pet to obey your orders, but it will only do so when you have to show them that you are the boss.

That's the only way that they will listen to you because if they don't view you as an authority figure then they won't obey. If they know you are the leader then they will listen to you even if they aren't wearing a leash.

You don't have to be harsh, but be firm in you commands and don't tolerate disobedience. Be gentle yet firm when using a dog training leash, and your animal will become one of the best behaved dogs around.

When your dog is supposed to be very reliable, leash and collar training is the perfect training method. This type of training will be especially useful with police and rescue dogs.

Different levels of forcefulness can be applied in leash and collar training. Even strong pulls to correct the animal. You need to use the right amount of force when pulling him as not the right amount for the situation is ineffective.

Teach him certain behavior with the leash on. Use the leash when he does not do what it is supposed to and correct him. The leash is used to communicate to your canine.

Trust is very important when training. He must trust you. You must be able to position him in positions he does not want to be in. You will have to get physical sometimes.

Once the training is complete, you should be able to control the dog without a leash or collar. You are the leader and the dog has to follow you. So do not rely on the leash or collar but rely on your skills as well.
