Dog Breeding - Encountering Problems
Dog Breeding - Encountering Problems
By Steve J. Griffin
Whatever activity you're involved in you can't expect things to run smoothly all the time. There will be times when you encounter problems and you need to find quick answers. As a dog breeder you can be sure that problems will arise now and then. If you think nothing will ever go wrong you might be in for a rude awakening. You should be thinking positively while at the same time keeping various 'what ifs' at the back of your mind.
To help you prepare I have listed below some of the problems you may encounter as a dog breeder. Your own problems may differ slightly but by learning about the potential solutions you will be able to deal with them as and when they arise.
Birth problems - these are quite common. It is your responsibility as breeder to keep a close eye on your dog when she is due to give birth. Occasionally a bitch will die during birth. Would you be able to handle the situation? Or the majority of pups in a litter may be born with deformities leaving only a few healthy specimens. Would you know what to do?
The mother may not be able to look after her young, in which case you will have to take care of feeding duties. You will need to feed the pups with bottles or tubes. If you're very lucky your female dog will be impregnated the first time followed by a straightforward birth. You need to bear in mind that this is not always the case.
Compatibility of dogs - the dogs may look compatible but looks can be deceiving. You need to check the dogs are truly compatible before you start the mating program. Ideally you should mate dogs of the same breed. If you plan to cross breed you should check the genetic ancestry of both dogs to ensure their pups will not inherit any faults or health problems. It is not a good idea to mate a Saint Bernard with a Bulldog because they are incompatible and the chances of the female dying during birth are greatly increased. Check out the breeding standards of each dog in order to find a suitable mate.
Dog breeding involves a lot of expenditure. Many breeders think they will be able to enjoy huge profits from their businesses. Unfortunately this is not the case unless you are planning to operate on a large scale. If you only have one female you will not make a lot of money. The expenses you incur will be very high compared to the profits. You will need to spend a lot of money on stud fees, vet fees, and essential items for the pups. Some breeders aren't interested in making money, they simply want to breed pups to give to friends and family members.
Anyone who wants to start dog breeding will need to take all these issues into account. How much time and money are you willing to invest? If you can answer these questions and you feel you can cope with the problems, then by all means go ahead.
Be ready to deal with any problems that arise and don't give up too easily.

Dog Breeding - The Pros and Cons
Dog Breeding - The Pros and Cons
By Linda M Griffin
There are pros and cons to every activity, and breeding dogs is no exception. As a prospective dog breeder you will need to weigh up the pros and cons before you start.
You may have thought dog breeding was an inexpensive hobby, but in fact that is not the case. It is a task which carries a lot of responsibility; and this includes taking care of your dog's health whether it happens to be male or female. The decision to start breeding dogs should not be taken lightly, and it needs to be discussed with family members and your local vet.
Pros
The pros of breeding a female dog are numerous, and they include the opportunity to produce good quality pups. Remember to choose loving homes for your puppies; you don't want them to end up in an animal shelter.
You may be able to breed champion pups from your female. Your kennel will attract more attention if one of your pups is declared a champion.
Cons
You need to be aware that every breed of dog has its own characteristics; and you also need to be aware of the drawbacks you may encounter as a result.
Stud costs can be excessively high, especially if you opt for the championship bloodline. You may have to spend hundreds or even thousands just to gain access to a purebred male.
Female dogs are weaker than males, and therefore more prone to health problems. Some females can be injured during mating, whilst others can develop life-threatening conditions. Your dog may die if she is left unsupervised whilst giving birth; and it is your responsibility to take care of her during this process, even if you have other matters to attend to.
When your dog becomes pregnant you will be liable for further vet expenses because of the need for regular check-ups. You will also have to pay for extra vaccinations and veterinary costs as and when required. These expenses can add up to thousands of dollars depending on the frequency of treatment and the number of visits to the clinic.
The puppies are also prone to health problems, and you may want to make arrangements with the owner of the stud in case any issues arise. Problems or faults with the puppies are normally attributed to the male.
The cost of vaccinations and food for the puppies can also be very high. You are responsible for providing the pups with high quality food, and you will also need to make sure the female regains her strength after the birth. These issues may involve further visits to the clinic.
Another thing to remember with females is they are prone to ongoing health problems. You need to be on the lookout for ovarian and breast cancers as these conditions are more common once the female has given birth.
Have you given any thought to the costs involved in dog breeding? You may find that once you've paid all your expenses you're not left with a great deal of profit, especially if you're only working on a small scale. If, on the other hand, you are breeding dogs for your own personal pleasure it can be a very rewarding activity.
So is dog breeding right for you? You need to think about this question very carefully, and weigh up all the pros and cons before you make your decision.

Dog Breeding - Medical Checks
Dog Breeding - Medical Checks
By Steve J. Griffin
When you want to breed dogs you obviously need a male and a female, otherwise you can't produce any puppies. Since your two dogs will be working for you to produce pups it makes sense to have them regularly checked. Medical checks are vital to ensure the ongoing health and vitality of your dogs. Whether you want to become a full-time breeder or you just want to produce extra pups for your own family, you should know a lot about dog breeding. If you are just starting out there is a lot to learn.
You cannot produce healthy pups if one of your dogs suffers from sterility problems. If one or both parents have sterility problems it will seriously affect the pups' chance of survival. The pups could be aborted or die shortly after birth. This condition, known as brucellosis, not only affects dogs but it can also be passed on to humans. As a dog breeder you need to be aware of this condition, and to take extra care during handling. Brucellosis can be transmitted to other dogs during sexual intercourse. It can also be transmitted through secretions left in the kennel of the affected dog. Vaccinations are essential to ensure the male dog remains in good health and the female is able to withstand the rigors of pregnancy.
As well as brucellosis there are several other conditions which affect your dog's wellbeing. Some dogs are deaf, and you may be able to detect this yourself following close observation. If you suspect your dog is deaf you should take it for a BAER test; and if the results prove positive you should have it neutered.
Heart conditions don't only affect humans; dogs can suffer from them too. One very common heart condition in dogs is known as SAS or Subaortic Stenosis. Other problems can be caused by malformations in the heart muscle itself, or in the valves.
There are a variety of other conditions to look out for too; and these include hemophilia, Willebrand's disease, digestive problems, allergies, malabsorptive syndromes, epilepsy, and poor temperament.
Dog breeding is not an easy task, whether it's a hobby or a full-time occupation. Either way you need to look after the health of the bitch and the stud, as well as any ensuing puppies. Breeding also involves a lot of research. You should learn about the ancestry of your dog breeds by going online or by reading good books. It is advisable to speak to an expert breeder who can give you a lot of information about the pros and cons. You won't know it all at the beginning, but with any luck you'll be able to produce a fine litter of pups. Put as much effort as you can into learning about the subject. Once you are educated you will find it much easier to deal with any problems that arise.
Medical checks are an essential part of the dog breeding process. You cannot produce healthy pups without healthy parents. Find a local vet you can rely on to perform regular check-ups. Having your dogs checked regularly should take priority in your list of things to do.
