When you own a dog you expect a certain amount of scratching, rubbing and itching to take place. After all, they're prone to the odd flea and they're covered in fur so it comes with the territory to a certain extent. However, when a dog is suffering from an allergy, particularly when it is related to the skin, it becomes very obvious that there is something wrong.
The trick is to identify that the dog's problem is an allergy and not some other unrelated complaint. There are some things to look for that will alert you to the fact that there is a problem.
Excessive scratching is a sign of some kind of skin allergy, but this can be accompanied by other complaints such as inflammation of the ears, head shaking, frequent licking or biting of the paws. Because there are different types of allergies the symptoms to look for will also be different.
An allergy known as atopic dermatitis is an allergy due to a hypersensitivity to particles that exist in the atmosphere such as dust mites, pollen or mold spores. The symptoms to look for in this case are licking or chewing at the paws, an inflamed red irritation on the belly or ears that are hot to the touch.
This is in contrast to a food allergy which can present in similar or contrasting ways with the symptoms ranging from skin irritation to an alteration of mood and behavior, vomiting, diarrhea and a loss of appetite.
If you suspect that your dog is suffering from an allergy, it is a good idea to take down notes of what you see the dog doing and what changes you notice. You can then use these notes to help the vet pinpoint exactly what the cause of the irritation might be.
Dog allergies are not trifling matters. They are best treated as early as possible both to alleviate the suffering of your dog and to minimize the expense. If you are vigilant you will stand a better chance at identifying any possible allergies in dogs in short order.

Many pet owners are not aware that their dogs can have allergies just like they can. One of the most common signs of allergies in a dog would be itching. When we see a dog itch, we normally think that it is just because of fleas but in many cases, it can be because of skin allergies. It can even be an allergy to fleas. Some of the most common things that your pooch can be allergic to would be such things as fleas, dust, and food.
It is very important to get your pet checked by a veterinarian if you suspect that he or she is suffering from allergies. There is no reason to panic of you find that your dog has allergies. Just like you, your pet can be treated for the things that he or she is allergic to so that you can minimize the symptoms that he or she have due to their allergies. There are shampoos, medications, and topical treatments to help your dog deal with the unwanted symptoms that come with allergies.
It is important to know what to look for where symptoms are concerned so that you can start treatment as quickly as possible. If you see that your dog is doing a great deal of itching or chewing on their fur, then that can be a good sign of allergies. Other common problems that Fido might run into would be sneezing, shaking his head, and rubbing his face all over the floor or carpet. You might also see that your dog seems irritates with his ears and he will try rubbing the ears with his paws.
Once you have determined that your dog has allergies, you and your vet will decide what type of treatment will be best to help get rid of the allergy symptoms. This will help greatly with the itching and chewing. Some people swear by giving their dog a bath with oatmeal added in the bath water. Flea collars are great to help keep fleas away to help calm the allergies but you may want to look into some of the flea collars that are made of natural products rather than the chemicals that are generally used to repel fleas. Some people find that the chemicals in some flea collars can irritate the skin on their dog worse and that is the last thing that they want. If you think your dog has allergies, then you need to have your dog checked by your vet as soon as you can. You vet may be able to give you some advice of what you can do at home until you can get your dog into the office for a visit.
