We all love our dogs very much, but sometimes the co habitation can get pretty rough, especially if your dog develops a habit of barking or howling constantly every night or for long periods of time. To make the barking stop, you need to understand a few things first.

The first thing is for you to understand that you are the leader of the pack. The relationship with your dog is not about being equal. That is not their nature. They need a pack leader and if they don't see you as being the one, then it is their survival nature to assert themselves as the one.

1. Don't give your dog any attention when they bark. Teach them that excessive barking equals not having your attention. Once they have stopped, praise him or her and reinforce being quiet. This can be done with a food treat or a toy to chew on.

1. Consistency is key. Always reward your pet with praises and treats when he or she does what you want them to, and ignore him or her whenever they do something that you do not approve, like barking for no reason.
2. You need to understand that barking is your dog's way of communicating with you and it is unreasonable to expect your pet to never make any noise. Maybe he is alerting you of a stranger near your house or that his food bowl is empty or that he needs to go outside.
