Most of us can agree that animal testing is usually a barbaric practices. We see smoking monkeys, rats with ears growing out of their backs, and guinea pigs injected with more hormones than a teenage boy. But did you know that the companies who test on animals also use dogs?
Beagles are notoriously mild-mannered, food motivated, and tolerant of poking and prodding. This is the reason they make such wonderful family dogs. Unfortunately, it is also the reason Beagles are so often selected and bred for animal testing. Their willingness to accept their fate for a dog biscuit makes them ideal candidates for abuse in the name of science.
There are facilities whose only purpose is to breed animals for scientific or medical testing, and Beagles are a choice breed for this purpose. Typically, an animal used for testing never sees the light of day. They are moved from the breeding facility to the testing facility inside opaque creates and are given treatments, foods, injections, or even operations as early as puppyhood. These Beagles do not get the love and attention that all dogs so desperately need. Instead, they are treated as large lab rats and kept locked up for the duration of their short, miserable lives.
The range of testing on Beagles is vast. Often times this research is something deemed necessary by the medical community, which is harder to protest. Experimental surgeries have been performed on many Beagles in the name of human health and the future of it. Besides these surgeries, questionable food products being evaluated by the FDA are often fed to Beagles to gauge their safety. Cleaning chemicals, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals are all also tested on Beagles. Some are applied topically, added to the food, squirted in the eyes, or even injected into the bloodstream.
Besides the cruelty of the tests themselves, animal rights activists have spent years trying to shut down various animal testing facilities. They have acquired documentation in the form of testimony of former employees and video of animals being abused in these facilities beyond the testing itself. These animals are left to whither in cages not even large enough for them to stand in. Video has surfaced of testing facility employees physically abusing these dogs when there is no logical reason for it.
The unfortunate side of this coin is that animal testing has led to many breakthroughs in human and veterinary medicine. Without animal testing, many diseases and ailments thus far would never have been cured or even made treatable. While the Beagle's unwilling participation in these horrific tests seems to be little more than cruel and unusual punishment, the more ethical side of animal testing has made great strides in medicine and health, for animals and people alike.

Though Beagles today are known primarily as great family pets and lovable lap dogs (even if they're far too big for you lap), they were bred for another purpose entirely. This is not uncommon; many breeds were initially developed to help in one line of work or another, but have since been bred into the wonderful companions we know and love today.
The skill Beagles were originally bred for was their tracking ability. This breed possess one of the best senses of smell in the entire canine kingdom, and the dogs once excelled at tracking and foraging. Because of this, Beagles were originally used as tracking dogs to aid hunters, hence their trademark howl. Today, Beagles are often used for different types of tracking.
Beagles are often used on search and rescue missions, trained to follow the scent of a missing person or seek out living victims in wreckage after building collapses, fires, or natural disasters. Beagles are also used as cadaver dogs after they have been trained to pick up the scent of decaying human flesh. When used for any of these purposes, Beagles' impeccable sense of smell helps them to succeed at finding their subjects. Beagles have saved many lives working on rescue missions with their handlers.
Beagles are used to track undocumented and illegal smuggling of agricultural items. This can be more difficult for other breeds, as the smell of fruits and vegetables is not an uncommon smell, even in an airport. However, the properly trained Beagle can sniff out and indicate a smuggler with the greatest of ease. Beagles are so successful at this task that the USDA developed a party of contraband-sniffing dogs called the USDA Beagle Brigade!
Besides detecting illegal plants and foodstuffs, Beagles are frequently used as drug sniffing dogs, sneaking out substances such as marijuana or cocaine on international airline passengers. The Beagle's highly sensitive nose can lead their law enforcement officer and handler right up to the criminal, without arousing as much fear or suspicion as a larger and more menacing dog like a German Shepherd might.
The Beagle's sense of scent is so particular and exact that they can pick out the presence of certain kinds of insects. In less glamorous work than law enforcement or rescue missions, Beagles are today and just recently being used to seek out the presence and location of termites in homes. Can you imagine being able to pick out a termite by smell? That is one powerful nose!
Beagles do not only have a fantastic ability to sniff out contraband items or pesky bugs. They are also intelligent, loving, food-motivated dogs that are eager to please. This makes training worlds easier, even training as detailed as coaching a dog to sniff out a tomato from over the border.

The number one underlining reason Pitt Bull attacks have escalated is because people are irresponsible and ignorant.
But, it must also be said that the nature of the breed is to fight and to attack.
Some people teach their dogs to be mean by depriving them of essential substances and are deliberately, physically, verbally and emotionally abusive towards their animal or animals.
Cruelness and irresponsibility are two contributing factors that are closely followed by some people's lack of responsibility and ethical character. Their own actions precipitate the growth of puppy mills which leads to inferior genetic inbreeding.
How unfortunate that a person would deliberately use their own viciously "trained" dog to baby-sit their own child in a self-contained space. This perverted judgmental individual went shopping, knowing full well that the dog she had just sequestered with her son was her own "attack dog." The tragic result was that he own son paid the ultimate price with the loss of his life.
Meanness breeds meanness and hatred. Teasing and tormenting teaches any living creature to mistrust, retaliation, and to contemplate ill doings.
It takes a patient, "informed an enlightened" adult led household, to teach the younger people of the family, about the history and breeding characteristics, of this specimen of canine animal.
During the early 1980's the "APBT" American Pit Bull Terrier was recruited and bred heavily for the purpose of monetary gain. Many of the (dreads) of society, out of greed and maligned ignorance, have created and exploited these animals, specifically for the purpose of human aggression.
Yet, these same nefarious individuals do not know the difference between an (AST) American Staffordshire Terrier and the (APBT) American Pit Bull Terrier.
