An Essential Step Before You Start House Training Your Dog

An Essential Step Before You Start House Training Your Dog
By Cary Benjamin

When you get your canine bundle of joy home, you imagine happy family holidays with the kids and your dog or sitting on the veranda when you're 60, with your faithful dog as a companion. There's a very good chance that this will remain a figment of your imagination if you fail to house train your puppy correctly. House training involves getting your pup or dog familiarized with the house and eventually train him to understand areas and things that are off limits.

An important part of house training is puppy proofing your home. This little is often something that owners over look. Puppy proofing is quite important to ensure the pup's safety and your convenience. The easiest way to do this is to imagine what you might do and where you might go if you were a pup! On a more serious note, ideally you should remove small objects from the floor or low furniture. Stuff that your pup can swallow should be kept away. Similarly, you want to take off the crystal and glass and other fragile items. Another important aspect is to ensure you're in the habit of closing doors of rooms or closets you don't want the dog to go into. This is especially important in the case of kitchen closets.

Although you might be in a hurry to start training the pup, you need to concentrate on first arranging for him a place of his own. It is important that this spot is kept clean and be different from the place he's allowed to poop or pee in. You will need to make this spot comfortable and fun for him and also ensure it is in a place where you can easily check up on him.

Steps to Puppy Proofing a Home

Steps to Puppy Proofing a Home
By Colleen Mihelich

Puppies, like babies, are curious and can cause themselves harm if they are not carefully watched. Because a dog can't be watched all the time, it is essential to puppy proof a home before bringing home a new dog or before giving a dog access to additional areas within your living quarters.

When first bringing a dog home, it is a good idea to restrict the area that the dog has access to. This is important for several reasons. A puppy may not be housetrained, and you do not want the dog to have accidents throughout the home.

Once a dog has an accident, that spot becomes a place that the dog wants to use as the bathroom, so you may risk repeated accidents throughout the house if you do not restrict your dog to a certain, easy to clean area.

Even older housetrained dogs may not be familiar with the method of letting you know that they need to go outside, so it is equally important to restrict the locations that an older dog can go on its own, until you and the dog have established a potty pattern.

In addition to protecting your home from accidents, initially restricting the area that your dog lives in can help protect your dog as well. Dogs are naturally curious animals and have a tendency to put things into their mouths. This creates a number of different hazards for a pup.

Household items, like socks or other fabric material, could potentially be ingested by a dog that thinks the fabric is a chew toy. Dogs especially enjoy chewing on their owners' socks or shoes, because these items can provide a dog with the comforting smell of their owner as well as something fun to chew on. Rugs with fringed ends can resemble chew toys to a dog or puppy, especially a dog that has played with a rope toy. Ingesting any of these household fabrics can lead to blockages in the intestinal system or stomach that can end up have to be treated surgically.

Smaller items can also be a choking hazard for dogs, even if the dog is unable to swallow them. Dogs learn by putting things in their mouths, and when a dog comes in contact with a new or unfamiliar object, for many dogs the natural inclination is to chew on that item. If they accidentally swallow things like small toys or other little items that a child or adult may leave around, the items could potentially get stuck in their throat and restrict their air supply. This could lead to the untimely death of a dog, and since owners want to delay the eventual purchase of pet headstones or pet urns for their deceased dogs for as long as possible, owners must be careful that they do not do anything to put the dogs life at risk.

Finally, household medicines and cleaning products can provide an extremely dangerous temptation for young dogs. Certain especially poisonous products, like antifreeze, have a very sweet taste and can be lapped up by a dog with deadly side effects. Other items, like pills or household medicines, can also be attractive for a dog to chew on. Finally, inhalers are the perfect size for a dog to confuse them for a chew toy, and if the dog accidentally punctures an asthma inhaler, concentrated albuterol is rapidly forced into their mouth resulting in toxic symptoms within seconds to minutes.

We all want to put off the day when we need to write pet memorials for as long as possible. Making sure that a puppy is kept in a safe, secure place that is free of hazards is the first essential step in protecting your pup and ensuring that he or she lives a long and healthy life.

House Train Your Puppy Today

House Train Your Puppy Today
By Cary Benjamin

So you decided to take the plunge and get a new puppy. Congratulations, you're about to embark on a long and fulfilling relationship. However, that relationship will be completely strained and may even be broken if you don't learn to properly house train your puppy. Here are 3 specific steps you can take to house train your puppy in no time flat.

The most important aspect of house breaking is to realize that your puppy is 100% capable of holding their business until they have to go outside. You shouldn't make excuses for your puppy, or they will start to think that it is OK if they don't go outside Also remember different breeds require different needs with respect to nutrition and other aspects of their life, and if any of them are unbalanced, it could make your house training much more difficult than it has to be.

First, the absolute most important aspect of teaching your dog to go outside is to establish a routine. You don't have to be around 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, but you must make it a habit to bring your puppy outside at the same times every day, no mater when that is.

Second, don't wait too long to bring your puppy out. The rule is that for every month in age, your puppy can wait an extra hour to go outside. For instance, a 4 month old puppy can wait 4 hours between potty breaks. This is a very rough rule, but it should give you a place to start.

Lastly, teach your dog crate training before you even attempt to house train them. This will give you a piece of mind when you must leave your dog alone, and will teach them to consistency, which, as we already discusses, is the key to quick house training.
