Aggressive Dog Behaviors

Aggressive Dog Behaviors
By Beth A Moore

Aggressive behavior is a major problem among dog owners. While you may have the best intentions, you probably shouldn't attempt to deal with this on your own without consulting a professional. Genetic and hereditary factors can play a major role in the aggression in your dog. Protective breeds such as Dobermans, Akitas, and Rottweilers are expected to be more aggressive than Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Feisty terriers were naturally bred to kill small game, and they still retain this characteristic.

Subtle signs of dominance usually go unnoticed or are explained away until the dog bites. The owner doesn't understand that the behaviors are progressing and blames the dog for biting "for no reason." Unfortunately alot of these dogs end up at animal shelters and are put down because their owners did not take the time to understand and correct this type of aggressive dog behavior.

There are quite a few types of aggression: defensive or induced by fear, pain, or punishment; dominant; possessive; territorial; intra-sexual (male-to-male or female-to-female); predatory; or parental. A dog can exhibit one or more types of aggression. That why it is very important to stop aggressive dog behavior.

Dogs that are characterized as Dominant-aggressive are confident, macho, and "on the muscle." They stand proud, up on their toes, with their ears up and forward. They carry their tails high and wag it slowly and stiffly from side to side. They often stare menacingly, and give off a low growl with their lips curled and teeth showing. Sometimes they will put a paw on the shoulder of other dogs, mount people's legs, and push children by the wayside when going through a door. Dominant-aggressive dogs demand attention. They demand to go outside, demand a ton of affection, are possessive of where they sleep, and stop eating when approached.

Most of these dogs will not obey your commands, especially ones such as "down" or "wait". Male dogs lift their legs on everything, even in the house, and even if they just emptied their bladder. The majority of dominant-aggressive dogs are in fact males.

What Does Aggressive Dog Behavior Mean?

What Does Aggressive Dog Behavior Mean?
By Aleesha London

There are several reasons why your pet may display an aggressive dog behavior. Unfortunately, since we don't understand dog language, we may think that dog aggression is just something dogs are born with to make their human masters' lives miserable. It is important to understand that the first step to solving problem behavior among dogs is to first understand the reasons behind them.

Fear Aggression

It's possible that your dog is showing aggression simply because it is afraid. Like a human being, a dog will do its best to fight against forces that it sees as harmful. Sometimes though, the sources of dog fear may not really pose any real threats. A hand gesture from you or the act of picking up something may be incorrectly perceived by dogs as intentions to hit it or pick an object to hit it with. In these cases, a dog's natural defense would be aggressive behavior.

In many cases, fear aggression is a learned response. Your dog may have had a traumatic past. He may have previously had violent owners. He may have been chained for long periods of time, hit repeatedly and deprived of food. Dogs that have had bad experiences in the past may be more defensive, suspicious and aggressive than normal.

Possessive Aggression

Just like humans, dogs do think of some things as their own. A dog's possessions may include its house, food dish and toys. In a way it may even perceive you and your family as part of its possessions. Aggressive dog behavior may therefore be shown because your dog simply wants to protect its own. It may become aggressive towards outsiders or even to members of your family if it thinks that its possessions are threatened. The well known territorial aggression is the same as possessive aggression. Areas that have been marked by your dog with its urine cannot be shared with anyone else.

Dominance Aggression

Dogs are inherently pack animals and lived with packs before their specie was domesticated. Animals that are related to dogs such as wolves continue to live in packs in the wild. In these groups, a clear hierarchy is formed. There is always an alpha male and an alpha female. Your aggressive dog may merely be simulating this age old tendency of its species to form hierarchies.

A dog can still feel that it is a dominant dog and that you are, or other pets in the house, are lower member of its pack. Fighting a dominant dog with aggression may only reinforce its aggressive behavior as it attempts to fight you for the top spot in the pack.

Redirected Aggression

Sometimes we aren't allowed to express anger or aggression. We therefore look for objects and situations to vent out our feelings on. Dogs are the same. If they feel some form of aggression for another animal or for another pet in your home, their owners would naturally want to stop them in any way possible. This could push dogs with pent up aggression to channel their energies elsewhere. This is bad news for you because you could be the nearest recipient of a big bite intended for another person or animal.

Don't condone aggressive dog behavior. There is a real need for you to find methods and techniques to train your dog to react in non-aggressive ways.

Finding out concerning the types of aggressive dog behavior is the first step. Discover the next step on how to stop aggressive dog behavior.

Can You Transform Your Aggressive Dog? Yes You Can

Can You Transform Your Aggressive Dog? Yes You Can
By Penny Jones

Aggressive dog behaviors can appear in even the sweetest looking pets. Being able to overcome these unwanted behaviors, though, means that you will need to find out what is setting your dog off in the first place. There are many triggers that can bring out the aggressiveness in dogs that are otherwise perfectly normal.

That's right, your dog can be either Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde and it's up to you to find out what trigger brings out that unwanted Mr. Hyde, so that you can eliminate it or redirect your dog's behavior around it.

What are these potential triggers? Have a look at the following list and see if any of these issues brings out the beast in your little beauty:

Territorial aggression - here, the aggressive dog will growl, bark, or bite people entering his or her domain. This might be directed toward the mail delivery person, someone walking by the house or yard, guests to your home, or even someone approaching when you are walking together down the street.

Dominant aggression - this aggressive dog will "bully" animals or family members that are smaller than the dog or that the dog feels are "beneath" him or her in the family hierarchy.

Fear aggression - this kind of aggressive dog is frightened, insecure, or nervous, and will growl, bark, or snap at just about any disturbance. This dog may bite when he or she feels cornered.

Possessive aggression - this aggressive dog has the most Jekyll/Hyde-like behavior because he or she will seem perfectly content until you try to take food or a toy from him or her.

Punishment aggression - you can create an aggressive dog out of one that would not otherwise have these tendencies by using negative, threatening, overly dominant, or abusive methods to punish your dog.

Pain aggression - an aggressive dog with this problem does not necessarily have a behavioral problem, but is instead acting directly out of pain and instinct. These behaviors are involuntary and result from injury or illness.

Predatory aggression - many dogs have a strong instinct to track and hunt prey, and this urge can bring out the aggressive dog in an otherwise calm pooch. Anything that moves becomes a target for this kind of dog, including joggers, children, small animals, birds, cars, bicycles, and just about anything else that isn't bolted down.

Maternal aggression - even the calmest dog can become an aggressive dog when she feels that her puppies may be threatened in some way. Unfortunately, to the new mother, just about anything can be construed as a threat - even if you are simply approaching the area to have a look.

Though there are other issues that can cause a dog to become aggressive, these are the main ones to watch for. Once you've discovered the triggers for your pet's unwanted behaviors, you can then take the next step - behavior modification training.
