A Simple Method For Housebreaking a Puppy

A Simple Method For Housebreaking a Puppy
By Cary Benjamin

Luckily for you, puppies are much easier to housebreak than older dogs. Older dogs have habits you need to break, are less willing to conform, and have weaker bladders! However, when you housebreak a puppy, there is certainly a right way and a wrong way.

Puppies are like people. You should always treat a little puppy as if they were your child. While this may be easy for some people, for others it may be tougher. The urge to blame the puppy for the mistakes it makes, even though it doesn't know any better, is strong. Therefore the best single piece of housebreaking advice anyone can give is to keep your patience level high, and your temper low.

Of course, everyone is interested in how to quickly and easily housebreak their puppy, as this is hands down the most frequently asked question by new dog owners. If you follow a strict set of rules and adhere to some basic housebreaking strategies, you can easily housebreak your puppy in as little as seven days. Of course, individual results may vary, but this is a good thumb rule.

The real place to start with house training is actually with crate training. You cannot be with your puppy 24 hours a day, so you need to put them in a place where they feel safe and comfortable and you can monitor whether or not they have an accident. Once they are used to the crate (and actually like spending time in there), you are ready to potty train, and it will take no time at all.

Be patient, be consistent, reward good behavior with praise and treats, and show the puppy who the owner is (in a polite way), and you'll be on your way to house breaking success!

How to Housebreak a Puppy

How to Housebreak a Puppy

How to housebreak a puppy with a puppy crate. Make sure that the crate is the right size for your puppy. Think of the crate as a den not a house to life in. If the crate is to big the puppy will use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to go potty.

Start crate training while you remain in the room with your dog. Praise your pet a lot while he or she is in the crate. When he or she comes out of the kennel, encourage them to return back into the kennel while using the command to kennel up.

After doing this for a while and your puppy is staying in the kennel longer then it is time to close the door and make trips out of the room. Gradually extend the time that you are out of the room. It will not take long before you can be gone several hours. If your puppy starts to bark or begins winning you may just have to ignore them.

A kennel for your puppy is never meant to be used as a place to put your dog when they are bed. After a while a dog will choose the crate for naps and consider it their own private place to spend time. The puppies learn that they can go into the kennel and nap and no one will bother them.

As a puppy gets older and learns the kennel up command, you expect the dog to go into the kennel on their own because you told them to do it. This exercise is the beginning of how to housebreak a puppy.

If you've ever brought a puppy home, you know how hard it is to house break them. Yet, it is so important because if they are not house trained, your house will quickly become vary hard to live in. What you probably don't know is that puppies are predictable and impressionable, which makes them very easy to train, if given the right strategies and advice. Here are a few tips to help you on your journey to a housebroken puppy.

The first thing you need to know is that the number one reason why owners fail in house training their puppy is because of a lack on consistency. One day the owner will take the puppy out at 3 in the afternoon and the next they'll take them out at 10 in the morning. This is very hard for a puppy to get used to, as they don't know when the next time they'll be able to relieve themselves will come around. Consistency is the number one rule in housebreaking.

While it isn't absolutely mandatory, crate training a puppy before you try to house train them is a great way to speed things up. If you don't do this, you'll run the risk of ruining your house as well as not being able to teach your puppy that there is a certain place to go when they have to go. If done correctly, it should only take a few hours to properly train your puppy to use the crate, and that time is very well invested.
