3 Surefire Tips to Stop Your Dog From Barking
By Cary Benjamin

Is your dog's incessant barking giving you sleepless nights? Are your neighbors giving you scowls every time you take your dog out for a walk? Do you find yourself barking at the dog, as much as it barks at you? Well, then, welcome to the dog owner's club. You might be glad to know that others are also suffering in the same way that you are and it is an absolutely normal phase of dog - owner bonding. If you find that your phase is lasting a bit longer than you would have liked, the following tips are sure to help you.

1) Find out when and why the dog barks. Dogs usually bark when they are lonely and want attention OR when they're scared or nervous. You can identify this by the noting the situations in which he barks. The best way to deal with either situation is to spend a good amount of time with your dog every day. Also, try keeping him around you when you're at home and keep talking to him. This will take care of his loneliness.

2) Give your dog loads of exercise. Taking him out for long walks or to a park where he can run freely and play with you will go a long way in helping him release all that energy he otherwise spends in barking his lungs out. Also, exercising and playing is bound to tire him out. Thus, he'll prefer eating and lying down instead of barking.

3) Respond when he does bark. His barking is usually a way of calling out to you. So he's going to keep doing it until he thinks you've heard him. When he barks go to him, maybe pat him and ask him (that's right, ask him) what's wrong. More often than not, the barking will cease.

7 Steps on How to Stop a Dog Barking

7 Steps on How to Stop a Dog Barking
By Sandra Hanson

There are many steps that you can take to help stop a dog barking. Barking for dogs is a way of communicating. Dogs bark for many reasons such as boredom, loneliness, stress or the need for attention. They also bark to warn or alert you of danger or just trying to get your attention. Also, they can be barking because a stranger is on your property. Sometimes the barking can become so excessive that it results in your neighbors being annoyed as well as yourself. To make a dog stop barking you need to start off by identifying what is causing your dog to bark in the first place, and once you are able to do this you can then move on to find a good solution to the problem.

Here are 7 steps on How To Stop A Dog Barking.

1. First of all, make sure that when you dog does bark that you don't yell at your dog when he or she starts barking for whatever reason. If you do yell, this will cause your dog to bark even more because the dog will interpret your yelling as more barking. Instead, what you should do is praise and reward your dog when he is quiet and ignore your dog when he barks.

2. Make sure your dog is getting plenty of exercise. Your dog needs to go for a walk at least twice a day as this will allow for regular exercise as well as giving your dog the opportunity to socialize. If you dog is happy and content then he or she is liable to bark a lot less.

3. Instead of allowing your dog to bark for the sake of barking, teach your dog to bark on verbal commands such as "bark" or "quiet."

4. Sometimes dogs bark because they are bored or are needing attention. When you are at home, make sure that you devote a certain amount of time playing with your dog and provide him/her with play toys. If you work all day, you can hire a dog sitter who will come to your house and take your dog to a park where your dog can run freely and be with other dogs.

5. Dogs bark out of frustration or to get attention. If your dog is low on food or water or needs to go to the bathroom then he will bark to let you know what his needs are. Also don't let your dog out if you know there is another dog or cat that might cause your dog to have a barking fit.

6. Dogs also bark because they are territorial. They are just trying to alert you to the fact that someone is either close or on your property. The best way to handle this type of bark is to acknowledge what your dog is trying to tell you. If your dog continues to bark send him to a designated area so that he can calm down.

7. If all else fails, you can buy a citronella no-bark collar which sprays a small amount of citronella when your dog barks. This collar is very effective as dogs dislike the smell.

If after trying all of the above steps you find that you have been unsuccessful at getting your dog to stop barking then you may want to consult with your dog's vet to get at the root of the problem.

End Your Dog's Barking Today!

End Your Dog's Barking Today!
By Cary Benjamin

Your dog has a natural need to bark. That much, you probably know. What you may not know, is that you can teach your dog when it is OK to bark and when it is not. Here are some simple tips to start teaching your dog right away. After all, silence is golden.

We cannot approach any issue related to dog barking if we don't know why dogs bark in general. Dogs bark because they need or want to attract attention, notify their owners of a stranger or unusual event, or for self defense, in that order of frequency. Most of the time it is to notify their owner or want attention, and very seldom it is to defend themselves.

So how do you know if you have a chronic barker? Simply put, if you remove the dog situation, or the situation from the dog, and the dog still consistently barks, you have a chronic barker and you can easily change when the dog will bark. All you will have to do is change the response the dog gets when it barks.

For example, if the dog is barking to get your attention, then you reach down and pet them right away, or even if you yell at the dog to stop, they will continue to bark to get attention, because that's what worked last time!

In order to break the habit, after the dog barks, tell the dog to stop by saying "Stop" in a firm voice (not yelling). Then, give the dog a chew toy to distract them from the barking. Once they stop barking, praise them for stopping the barking, not for barking. Then spend time with them and play with them when they are quiet. This should be more than enough to kick their habit.
