3 Common Mistakes That Lead to Aggressive Dog Behavior
3 Common Mistakes That Lead to Aggressive Dog Behavior
By Cary Benjamin
Dogs are, hands down, the best companions you'll ever meet. They are loving, they are always trying to get their owner's approval, and they are always there for you! However, some dogs may seem aggressive. Usually this is because of a few simple mistakes made by their owners.
The most common mistake I've seen is hitting or spanking your pet. Most dogs are truly trying to do their best for their owner, but when they get hit or yelled at, fear is instilled in the animal and they turn aggressive. It is teaching a bad habit... that fear and violence are good ways to express emotion. Never, ever hit your dog, or you will quickly realize the dog will become out of control.
Secondly, encouraging rough playing like tug of war or something along those lines is very aggressive in nature. By teaching that this behavior is OK, you are sending the message that this behavior is OK and it will confuse the dog. They just can't recognize the difference between good aggressive behavior and bad.
Instead, play frisbee or run with your dog. Play catch, or just go for a walk. The dog must burn off energy, but make it in a playful, synergistic manner. Don't play any games which may be construed as violent or confrontational in any way.
Lastly, keeping a dog caged for an extended period of time is never the best of ideas. Even though you will have to keep the dog caged for at little bit here and there, try to keep it down to a minimum. Your dog will thank you for it in spades.

Simple Ways to Tame Your Overly Aggressive Dog
Simple Ways to Tame Your Overly Aggressive Dog
By Cary Benjamin
Owning a dog can be a great experience. But with the joy of owning any pet, there is also the responsibility of properly training and socializing them so they turn out well-adjusted and happy. Sometimes, either through their temperament or some fault of the owner, a puppy can go astray and have behavior problems. Perhaps the most dangerous behavior problem is the issue of having an overly aggressive dog. Although they are considered domesticated, they are still animals, and subject to acting like animals at times. If faced with a dog who displays aggression, here are a few tips that can help the owner gain control over the its demeanor.
First and foremost, it is important to remember that it is much easier to teach the proper behavior from the start than it is to try and reteach a behavior. With this is mind, sometimes a dog will learn an unsavory behavior, one which the owner is determined to curb and change. One way to deter such behavior is by refusing attention when such behavior is displayed. This means that when a puppy is acting aggressively, the owner should not acknowledge them, which is usually what it is seeking. By doing this, the bad behavior is not being reinforced.
Another smart practice, which is especially helpful in the early stages of dog training, is refraining from any sort of aggressive play with the dog. This includes such things as rough-housing or wrestling, playing tug-o-war, or any other activity that might insert a sense of dominance for one party or the other. While teaching proper behavior is easiest, and usually the most desirable route to taming an overly aggressive dog, sometimes there are other forces causing them to act in such a manner.

What You Need to Know To Stop Aggressive Dog Behavior
By Aleesha London
Do you wonder how to stop aggressive dog behavior? For some dog owners this is not an easy or simple task. Before anything else, you need to know some important facts about dog behavior and dog aggression training.
1. Dogs are not irrational creatures.
It is important to realize that dogs are not irrational. They do not just turn against people, animals or their owners for no reason at all. Just like humans, there are a couple of things that could get on a dog's nerves. Some of the causes of dog aggression include fear of being hurt, the dog's tendency to protect its own and an incorrect perception of its superiority over all others. Knowing these reasons will help you see your dog in a new light that will permit an appropriate response.
2. You can contribute to the promotion of aggressive behavior.
You may be part of the problem. You may not want to accept it at first but it is possible that some of your own actions could lead to dog aggression. Taking away a dog's toy or dish for example could make your dog think that you are trying to steal from it. Raising a stick in your hand to play fetch could be perceived too by a traumatized dog as a position of attack and will try to defend itself. The simple act of reaching over to pat your dog may also be mistaken as a challenge to its dominance.
3. Aggressive behavior can be corrected.
Dog trainers and experts with background on canine psychology know how to stop aggressive dog behavior. Your dog is not beyond help even if some claim that you have a particular breed that is aggressive in nature. Take the time to read on dog training approaches and pick a trainer who uses techniques that you are comfortable with. Appropriate obedience training may be the only way to straighten out your dog's behavior.
4. You can correct dog aggression yourself.
You don't always have to pay for expensive dog training. You can teach your dog yourself to stop being aggressive. To be on the safe side though, you should follow a reliable manual or guide book for training. Inappropriate techniques could make your dog's behavior worse. You could also be endangering yourself.
5. Physical punishment is never a good idea.
New methods for training dogs never include punishment. One old technique is the use of physical force and punishment. Many experts however now acknowledge that this is not an advisable technique. Using sticks, leashes, collars and shock equipment are not only cruel. They might also reinforce violent behavior among dogs.
6. Non-aggressive behavior is the key to a happy relationship.
Finding a solution to your dog's behavior is crucial. If you give up on correcting aggression in your dog, you could be signing the death warrant on your relationship with your pet. The only key to having a happy and affectionate companion is to stop its aggressive ways.
Although it is easy to dismiss and give up your dog if you don't know how to stop aggressive dog behavior, is still not an excuse. There are ways and means for you to learn how. You just need to be patient and persevering. If you love your dog, you will not stop at nothing to find a solution.
Does your dog have a growing aggressive dog behavior? Know how to stop aggressive dog behavior now before it's too late for you and your canine companion.
