By William Williford
The Labrador Retriever has accomplished many achievements. This remarkable dog was bred to hunt and retrieve, (water retrieve). The main contributor to the Labrador retriever breed was the Saint's Johns waterdog a breed located in Newfoundland, ( Canada) . The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog in the U.S.A., with mostly being used for hunting, service work, detection, and search and rescue.
This AKC favorite is a muscular dog with a wide range of weights from a medium size dog of 50 pounds to a large size dog with weights reaching 130 pounds. This breed of dog comes in many colors black, chocolate, yellow, white, fox red, charcoal, silver, and brindle with only the black, chocolate, and yellow being the only three colors recognized by the AKC as registerable colors.
The water resistant coat of the Retriever is a double coat with the fur of the under coat being dense and the outer coat being short, straight fur, rather slick in appearance. In addition, a long thick tail often referred to as an "otter tail". Degree of heights can range greatly also from a short 20 inches to a tall 36 inches. Dog Breed - Which One is the Most Popular?
Dog Breed - Which One is the Most Popular?
By Thanate Tan
Since the domestication of the dogs (roughly 15000 years ago according to some estimates), there has been a wide range of breeds available. There are about 475 registered breeds in the world today. This is due to the selective breeding of the dogs which allow pups with certain desirable trait in them. Some breeds are more suited to heavy works such as Siberian Husky, others are more suited to family life such as the Labrador, while there are other breeds like the Chihuahua which are more of a playful pet.
While there are a number of breeds but the most popular breeds for the year 2008 in the U.S.A according to the AKC (American kennel club) registration records is the Labrador Retriever. The other popular breeds in the top five according to the registration records were Yorkshire terrier, German Shepherd Dog, Golden Retrieve, Beagle in the decreasing order of popularity. The bulldog was the eighth popular breed, making it to the top ten for the first time in more than 70 years.
The Labrador Retriever has been the most popular dog in America since 1991. The popularity of the Labrador Retriever speaks of its ability to adapt in the role of a family dog. Some qualities and attributes of the Labrador Retriever are:
General Temperament - The Labrador Retriever is an intelligent and family loving dog. It is quite affable and energetic, adapting well to indoors as well as outdoors, and its great love and patience for children make it the ideal dog for a home. It adapts easily to the apartment life. Also its good intelligence, loyalty, patience and eager to please attitude make it ideal for the role of helper dog. In its role as a helper dog it is used a guide dog to the physically challenged as well as companions to the elderly people.
Physical Appearance - The male weighs about 30-35kg. while the female is lighter, in range of 26-32kg. Their coat is quite short and straight. The tail is otter like, broad and strong, while the toes are webbed. Their coat is interwoven and hence somewhat waterproof.
Life Expectancy - The average healthy Labrador Retriever is expected to live for 12-14 years. It is quite prone to obesity. Due to its floppy ears, it may get ear infections.

Training a Black Labrador
Training a Black Labrador
By Lance Dickey
When I first bought a black lab puppy I didn't think that I would have to put much time into training a black Labrador. I figured I could just raise it and play with it when I got off work and it would sit and listen. How wrong was I.
Little did I know that training a black Labrador retriever is actually time consuming.
I learned that you have to start training a black Labrador when they are a puppy so you can eliminate all of their bad habits like biting, chewing, barking and chasing cars. It is also the best time to potty train them because they will get set in the habit of going outside early. During my black Labrador training regime I noticed that they like to run, play and be active.
Training a black Labrador took a lot of puppy treats and carpet cleaner because you will reward them when they do something good with a treat. The carpet cleaner was because well, he was a slow learner but after awhile he got the hang of it and then it never happened after that. Training a black Labrador is easier in my mind than any other dog because they are just smarter, but that is my opinion folks.
After about a month of training a black Labrador retriever I could make him sit just by snapping my fingers. He was potty trained to wait by the door when he had to go to the bathroom and barking doesn't exist unless someone is trying to break in.
The best guide I used for training a black Labrador or any other dog would have to be http://www.squidoo.com/blacklabradortraining, I used what he recommend and it worked perfectly.
