2 Detrimental Mistakes Most Dog Owners Make When House Training
By Cary Benjamin

If you have a new puppy, you don't need to be told how important it is to house train your puppy. While the awesome, excited feeling of having a new addition to your family is great, the reality that you're looking at a huge responsibility soon sets in, and you may run into some trouble house breaking your dog. If this sounds like you, don't worry. There are a few mistakes that will absolutely ruin your chances of quickly house training your dog, and if you know what they are so you can avoid them, you'll see success before you even know it.

There are a lot of old myths out there that make house training sound like it is a brute force, purely physical activity. This couldn't be further from the truth, and in fact, if you use some of the more negative ways to train your dog, you'll see that your results will greatly suffer.

First, yelling is out of the question. Shouting at a dog will only make matters worse, and will completely destroy the trust and love that the dog has (or used to have) for you. Dogs can hear you from miles away, so the idea that you have to yell to get your point across just doesn't make sense.

Second, if you are inconsistent with your potty training efforts, you'll find that the puppy will go anytime, and anywhere they feel like it, no matter what you have to say about it. House training is an unnatural act for a dog, so you must be consistent so they know exactly what to expect.

3 Detrimental Dog Training Mistakes You Probably Make

3 Detrimental Dog Training Mistakes You Probably Make
By Cary Benjamin

Dog training is not as easy as some people make it sound. How easy it is to train your dog depends greatly on your dog specifically... what breed, their background, and even their disposition. There are, however, some things that you may be doing which are completely sabotaging your dog training.

When you start training your dog, you should begin by laying down a few ground rules. Like building a house, if the house is build on a shaky foundation, the house will not be sturdy at all, and may come crashing down at some point. Most of these mistakes are along these lines.

First, shouting during training is an easy, yet counterproductive thing to do. It is easy to get caught up and frustrated with the training and your dog's progress, quickly leading to yelling. You should realize, however, that yelling actually is detrimental to your training. Your goal is to get your dog to obey to your commands in your calm voice, not your yelling voice.

Second, taking any longer than 15 minutes to train your dog during one session is something not many amateurs know about. You dog has a shorter attention span than you do, and if you try to stretch out the training session for longer than 15 minutes, the dog will just become frustrated and so will you.

Lastly, forgetting to praise and treat your dog every single time they follow a command or acts the way you want them to act. It's easy to forget to give them a treat every time, never fail, but if your dog is expecting a treat and you forget, your dog will lose confidence that they did the correct action and may be set back quite a bit.

3 Detrimental Housebreaking Mistakes Most Dog Owners Make

3 Detrimental Housebreaking Mistakes Most Dog Owners Make
By Cary Benjamin

The first order of training that a owner will try to get a dog to perform is house training. Once they are house trained, most find that all other training is much easier. But getting over that first hurdle of potty training your dog can be very tough. Unfortunately, there are 3 mistakes that most dog owners make that will completely derail the possibility of housebreaking a puppy.

The first mistake that owners make in trying to potty train their puppy is one that most overlook. Nobody wants to have a puppy that isn't housebroken, and it may be tempting to train them for hours in order to speed up the progress that they would like. However, this is one of the things that owners commonly overlook: never work with your dog any more than 15 minutes in a day. If you end up changing their schedule to meet yours, you will quickly find that the puppy cannot deal with change all that well, and by default they will start going in the places you don't want them to.

A second common mistake is that dog owners sometimes wait too long to start housetraining. As the pup gets older, their bladders will change to the point where they don't know how to control their release. If you do find that you're behind in training, don't worry too much, but get started right away!

Lastly, by not being consistent, you are sending confusing signals to your pup, and you'll be very lucky to get any sort of response out of them. However you decide to train, always be sure it is consistent.
